January 16, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I started the deep cleaning of my greenhouse today.

Tore out some netting and metal trellises.

Uses one of those Shark floor steamers (like a swiffer,) a spray decreased, and a squeegee. Completely cleaned he inside of rhe polycarbonate panels and half of the exterior panels.

Have to do the exterior of the 2 short ends and North side of roof/wall tomorrow.

System worked fantastic!

Tomorrow I am going to start eggplant tomorrow and pepper seeds! The garden is technically starting....life begins anee!

Yay! So HAPPY to see SPRING start for anyone. I have MONTHS to go, yet.

However, I’m having fun with graph paper, colored pencils and little cut-outs of veggie plants while planning for Spring. :)

We have a MAJOR indoor project going on right now. ‘The Chairman’ told me it’s a GO for new flooring in the Family Room, so I am spending this week moving everything I can lift myself OUT of there and into other parts of the house.

Supposedly, he has a ‘plan’ for the gun safe which is the size of a VW Bug. Can’t wait to see THAT, LOL!

Of course, all of my Houseplants take priority and will be filling any and all south-facing windows, first and foremost. ;)

Not starting all the tomatoes tomorrow, but the Brandywine and Cherokee Purples for sure.

I can’t believe it. It’s January and it feels summery.

I’m so confused! Extremely warm breeze when I was out back watering.

Haven’t been out in months. Tiny little heads forming on cabbage that was planted last year. Four potato plants forming and pepper plants are still there and have peppers on them.

I guess I’ll have to get busy.

:)

Cool and damp here in Central Missouri over the past week. We got a couple inches of snow - just enough to make a mess of things - that's been hanging around.

Nothing going on in the garden. Been chipping away at my shop projects. Finished up with Pops tractor and got it out of the way. He's happy to have it back and I'm happy to see it gone. lol

This is what the tank looked like before it was painted and installed in the tractor.

We brought the box blade in for a hitch replacement. It got wadded up when I had a Lamont moment while I was cleaning out the pond.

Got it mostly finished yesterday. Just need to flip it over and weld a couple beads on the bottom side of the new parts, and then slap on some fresh Rustoleum. To replace the hitch with factory parts was going to cost around $275. I spent less than $75 on materials and supplies to rebuild from scratch, and now have a hitch that's much stronger than the original.

With absolutely nothing to do these days, I've decided to plan out my above ground garden. Here's my question:

I have a friend I play softball with and after our games, we sit at the picnic table and have a beer or two or eat lunch. At the end of the summer, he brings fresh vegetables to the table that he shares with us.

Our favorite is his green onions that have a round bulb on the end that is slightly larger than a quarter in diameter that he planted from small little bulbs he purchased in a packet of about 50 or 100 that he got from Menards.

Does anyone here know what kind of green onions those are and where I can find them on the internet?

For my second question: I'm going to order tomato seed packs but I'm not sure what to order.

Hybrid or Heirloom?

My tomato preference is strictly for sandwiches and salads.........

Any advice you folks can give me I would appreciate..........Thanks

If this is what your friend shared, you are looking for 'Spring Onions.'

What Are Spring Onions, then?

Spring onions, on the other hand, look similar to scallions, but you’ll notice that they have small onion bulbs at the base. These onions come from the varietals that produce bulbs and are basically more mature versions of scallions. They are planted as seedlings in the late fall and then harvested the next spring, thus the word “spring” in the name.

Spring onions are sweeter and mellower than regular onions, but the greens are more intense in flavor than scallions. The bulbs can be red or white, depending on the varietal, and while they can be used in much the same way as regular bulb onions, they are great grilled, roasted whole, or used like pearl onions.

Bella Rosa
Defiant
Cherokee Purple
Any variety/color in the ‘Goliath’ series
Any variety/color in the ‘Chef’s Choice’ series

These are all available at Jung Seed. http://www.jungseed.com

*WEEKLY BOOK RECOMMENDATION*

Whether you are new to gardening, or just need reminders, I highly recommend any of these state-specific Month-By-Month gardening books. They help to keep me on track with projects and planning for the gardening year ahead and give me ideas for occupying my 'down time' when I'm not actively growing veggies and flowers outdoors.

Have you picked out your flooring yet? We did a remodel 11 years ago and discovered Teragren Bamboo flooring. It is commercial grade, thick and almost bulletproof. It comes coated so you don’t ever need to reseal. After 11 years it looks like new still not one scratch. Did a spare bedroom and bathroom in it.

Look for White Onion ‘sets’ or ‘Bunching Onion’ seeds.

You could probably use any onion ‘sets’ that you find, but I’m thinking they only form small bulbs like you want IF they are planted in the FALL and harvested the next spring. And that probably depends upon where you live, too, as far as having a mild enough winter.

Anyone else have experience growing these? I’ve only grown regular onions and leeks.

The Mannington ADURA LVT flooring is already ordered and will be in on Friday. Color is called 'Tiger's Eye.'

So far I've gotten ONE area of the room cleared out. OMG! This is gonna be some WORK! We're starting on Tuesday, next week.

Thanks for the advice. My friend is going to keep his eyes open this spring for the onion bulbs he plants that he finds at Menards. He missed his chance last year and they were all sold out. If I can't find any, I'm going to go with seeds.

With that being said, I think I sent you pictures of my above ground garden box that I built. The planting area was approx. 2 3/4' by approx. 5 3/4' next to my neighbor's house.

Well, I finally found out she's still alive and when I finally saw and talked to her a couple weeks ago, I mentioned my garden and she never even knew I had built one since she never leaves her house for gardening.....LOL!

Anyway, I told her about the garden then asked for her permission to use the remaining space to the back of her house and she said sure. That is going to allow me to add an additional 5'x 8' addition to the planting area.............
