Progressives relish the death of free speech because it allows them to silence opposing arguments that are difficult to refute and facts that undermine their narrative. However, the monster they have unleashed will devour all and sundry, them eventually included. We now live in a country where anyone can be destroyed at any time for saying anything deemed afterward to be politically incorrect. Since political correctness is a totalitarian ideology, this applies to every corner of society. For example, an offhand remark by a sports announcer can result in cancelation:
Nearly five months after drawing criticism for making a sexist comment while broadcasting a game, Mike Milbury is out at NBC Sports, the network confirmed.
Prior to his cancelation, Milbury announced hockey games.
Presenting the thought crime that wrecked his career:
After play-by-play man John Forslund said, “If you think about it, [the bubble is] a terrific environment with regard to — if you enjoy playing and enjoy being with your teammates for long periods of time, it’s a perfect place,” Milbury replied, “Not even any women here to disrupt your concentration.’’
That’s all it takes.
The next day, the NHL issued a statement criticizing Milbury’s remark, saying the league “condemns the insensitive and insulting comment that Mike Milbury made during last night’s broadcast and we have communicated our feelings to NBC. The comment did not reflect the NHL’s values and commitment to making our game more inclusive and welcoming to all.” …
As we learned while watching ballplayers kneel to Black Lives Matter rioters as they looted stores, set fire to police stations, and tore down statues of the Founding Fathers, no bastion of the liberal establishment is more militant than professional sports.
Milbury promptly issued an apology, but this was futile, as usual.
If you enjoy old movies, get them on DVD. Half the dialog in anything made early enough to be worth watching would now qualify as wrongthink. It is only a matter of time before everything from the unwoke past is erased.
Soon even liberals will realize that they don’t like living in a country where you constantly have to walk on eggshells and can never speak naturally. By then it will be too late — if it isn’t too late already. Repression has a mind of its own.
On a tip from Wiggins.
bttt
New article on an old incident.
Never cared for the guy but this isn’t right.
But then none of this cancel culture BS is.
He wasn’t very good, politically incorrect is an excuse
Brian Williams was fired for a good reason; he was inserting himself into news stories. Making stuff up and pretending he had done things that never happened. He lost the trust of the viewers.
He is back on MSNBS already. I don’t have any idea of his numbers of viewers.
No. He got fired for repeatedly and frequently making stupid statements. At some point you simply must acknowledge that this person doesn’t understand that times have changed.
They just made if official yesterday that he’s not back for the studio either.
times have changed......AND WHY is that? For good or bad?
Times have changed because that’s what times do. And we hope it’s for the better, we try to steer them that way.
“Coming soon—the left will require all women dress like they did in Communist China—baggy mono-chrome clothes that prove their obedience to The Party.”
Says something about human nature. It can be repressed for a lifetime, but it is still there. I guess the same thing holds with the church in Russia.
Blazing Saddles.
They knew he was lying for years and were comfortable with it because they were telling him to lie. They only removed him when they needed it as an excuse because he was too expensive. He's working for a lot less on MSNBC, likely the bare minimum, regardless of what they advertise his salary as. It's an industry based on deception and non-disclosure agreements.
“Times have changed because that’s what times do. And we hope it’s for the better, we try to steer them that way.”
Times do not always change for the better. Back in the day, if I said, ‘Damn, I just blew the Tranny”, that meant I had car trouble! It did not mean what it means now! Change isn’t always good, or wise....
From what I can see, if they want to make the NFL more inclusive, they need to get some more white players.
Dear NBC Sports, that was not a sexist remark. You’re idiots.
Well I think when it comes to not denigrating and marginalizing entire groups of people out hand that’s a good change. And a change Milbury has an extended history of not getting.
“Well I think when it comes to not denigrating and marginalizing entire groups of people out hand that’s a good change. And a change Milbury has an extended history of not getting.”
I won’t disagree with that at all. However, it seems to me that we have gone from “Non-Marginalizing” to bowing down and knuckling under to say 13% of the population, or whatever percentage the minority of the week is of the population. That is the problem that I have.
It’s easy for white guys to see it as knuckling down, just because we’ve been in the upper position. In the long run most (not all to be sure, but most) is just treating them the way we’re used to being treated. Really, bringing it back, there’s just no good reason to call out women as a distraction on live national TV. That’s just lame. The “women weaken the legs” line in Rocky was partly to show he was a crusty old guy out of touch with the times. And that was 40 years ago. If you’re sounding like a character from 40 years ago that was specifically written to be behind the times, you probably need to update.
As far as the woman angle, once you figure out who you can’t make fun of or criticize, then you know who rules over you. So, this guy deserves to lose his job because he is not a beta, blue pill, vagina worshipper? And again, “behind the times”? So we can justify pretty much anything as long as it is new and “with the times?” Sorry, not buying it. Using that logic then, the Constitution is pretty much useless as it cannot be with the times as it is so old. So it must be a “living, breathing” document, right?
Rocky? lol so we are taking our intellectual cues from Hollywood now? So they think it is wrong so it must be? Sorry, not buying that BS.
And I don’t know about you, but I have yet to see this “upper position” you speak of. My whole life I have had to fight like I am the third monkey trying to get aboard Noah’s Ark, and brother, it has just started to rain.
Not necessarily. George Carlin talked about you truly can only make fun of your own group. Once you start crossing into somebody else you need to be VERY clever to not cross a line into racism, misogyny or just being bad. And that was in the 70s George talked about that.
Wow that’s a bad piece of strawman there. Constitution comparing to misogyny.
Actually yes we do take our cues from Hollywood. Like it or not they are a major part of our culture. Both on the creating and understanding side.
Culturally we’re still in the upper position. Have you ever been called a boy after you hit adulthood? Anybody ever assume you went to school just to find a spouse? Ever had anybody say the job your doing is too technical just cause you’re a white guy? These are all things people who don’t look like us still run into. Sorry you want to pretend it ain’t so, but it is.
Or as the South Park episode put it,
“I am making an example of you. To send a message out to people everywhere that if you want to hurt another human being, you better make damn sure they’re the same color as you are.”
