Ok, I'm getting fed up with the internet and Windows. Windows not-so-much, but under WinXP, the versions of Firefox and Chrome I can run are pretty ancient and I either get hit by tons of ads or it gives me a time error and won't even let me in. So I have an older CD which is Knoppix 5.1 and I am trying to configure it to talk to my modem. If you have had experience with this and have hints/tips, please let me know! TIA!

32 bit is another limitation. The above link gives a list of 10 distros that still support 32 bit and therefor are also lightweight. A lightweight browser would be best too. No running firefox with 30 open tabs. Falkon is a pretty good one and made by KDE which is Linux developers.
I’m pretty sure that a Celeron D is a 64 bit processor. Did we get confirmation on that?

Celeron 352 (C) 3.2 GHz
physical address extension 32 bit
instruction set 64 bit
greek to me
They have 64 bit timelines here; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit_computing
Looks like mid 2000s was the beginning of the changeover for PCs. MS had a 64 bit XP but cancelled it in 2005 due to lack of PCs running 64 bit processors.
I agree. Mint seems to be the most “like” windows so is an easy transition.
The problem is I at first downloaded Ubuntu and installed it, while I was copying ISO files out of it I completely clobbered a HD that had about 70GB of data on it. Ubuntu couldn’t see the data. WinXP couldn’t see the data. I downloaded Mint and started it up and it saw the data. So now I get to pull off the cover of my PC and install a hard drive to copy it all off the corrupted drive...
Arghhh!!!!
Throw a external usb drive on it and no need to pull the cover
Yeah, I decided to use a 128GB thumb drive, but I am now backing that up to another PC before I write to it...
You are correct, my machine is indeed a 64 bit machine, as reported by Linux Mint.
Windows XP only said it was 32 bit,,,
So I am currently converting/copying data across and will soon be done with XP.
Thanks for the tip!
