Public warned of mountain lion activity in vicinity of university area in Colorado

City of Fort Collins officials took to social media to warn the public of mountain lion activity in the vicinity of a Colorado State University area.

The Facebook post goes on to say that "mountain lions are a natural part of the ecosystem and negative interactions with them are extremely rare."

While some mountain lions tend to move into the lower foothills during this time of year, the university says the lion roaming near the campus may have been pushed further east to avoid competing against other lions for food.

Make yourself “large" by waving your arms above your head, speak loudly, and throw objects, such as rocks or sticks, in the mountain lion's direction, while avoid bending down or crouching . If attacked, always fight back.

Rocks do not grow on trees, so how do you obtain rocks without bending over.
Just bend way over and kiss it goodbye.

My veterinarian had been involved with one from a zoo, he said you would not stand a chance.

What do they expect the animals to do when Antifa/BLM set fires everywhere last fall?

Watch out for those cougars; don’t buy them drinks and for God’s sake don’t take them home with you (though their place might be okay).

I suppose the fires in that area have taken their toll on the wildlife, so food may be more scarce

Brass knuckles from the local pawn shop. Pocket knife. Switch blade knife. Keep in pocket just in case. Keep alert when taking out the garbage. Boulder is even closer to the mountains. Lots of 80 pound dogs in Boulder. Baseball bats are not just for summer in the park. A person should carry a machine gun at all times, yet the government would probably frown on such a procedure. Brass knuckles are easily found.

Solution:

Don't carry venison jerky on your person.

I was stalked and nearly attacked by a pair of mountain lions 26 years ago this month (likely a mother and almost full grown cub). Scary. I once touched the claws of dead lion on display and they are needle sharp. They could rake you to pieces.

No worries. They just use them to hold onto you while they crush your neck in their mouth.

I wasn’t stalked but warned off by a mountain lion while hiking in the east side of the Guadalupe Mountains in New Mexico. The snarl scared the hell out of me I backed down the trail then turned slowly to walk back the way I came from. Never saw the mountain lion, just heard the snarl close by.

Basically, if a person sees a wolf or mountain lion in the wild, you can assume they have been stalking and sizing you up for dinner. Long before you have seen them, they have known you are around.

FWIW, we have a “Resident Queen” on our family farm in Northeast Texas.
(Fwiw, the State Biologists of TPWD state that, “- - - -unless she is driven away by human activity OR there is a natural/manmade disaster that destroys the local environment or wipes out food sources, a female puma will be born, live out her life & die within 5 miles of where she was birthed.”)

Our family sees her quite often & she bothers NOBODY & NOTHING whatever. = Our farm has plenty of rodents, rabbits & other similar/good things for her to hunt & eat.
(Our family’s DVM has seen her several times & guesses that she weighs 80-100 pounds & “appears to be healthy & well-nourished”.)

It’s almost always the adolescents or the super hungry cats that wander into town. They grab dogs and cats out of yards and patios. The large adults stay at higher altitude away from people.

“FWIW, we have a “Resident Queen” on our family farm in Northeast Texas.”

Many years rock climbing in the Rocky Mountains, only twice seeing one.

Recalling a friend’s family farm in West Texas and you could not easily see another farm from his. With that in mind, I’m thinking your “Resident Queen” is the TOP of the food chain?
We have coyotes and I would NOT want to argue with them who is the top of the local chain.

Beautiful and frightening, Blake knew them well!

Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp,
Dare its deadly terrors clasp!

When the stars threw down their spears
And water’d heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Fwiw, the TOP of the food chain in the area where our farm is located is likely the considerable number of LARGE/AGGRESSIVE COYDOGS.

Certainly, those feral/wild hybrids, which hunt in roving packs, could injure or kill a cougar IF they could catch her in a place where she could NOT “shoot up a tree” & OUT of danger. = We have NO shortage of large trees on the farm, so she is likely in little actual danger.

Those packs of dangerous coydogs & the numerous feral hogs, that pass through the local area, are the PRIME REASONS that nobody walks about on our farm without a suitable/loaded firearm.
(Further, every such feral canine hybrid is SHOT/KILLED if they are “chasing our livestock”.)

In the “vicinity” of the “area.” Great headline.
