Everyone has an opinion to the woman's reaction to her boyfriend winning lottery money

A woman's response to her boyfriend winning National Lottery money has gone viral, after it divided the internet.

The issue was shared on the MoneySavingExpert Instagram - a website founded by Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis.

"My brother’s girlfriend gave him a National Lottery scratchcard as a Christmas gift, and he won £500.

"She thinks he should give her some of the money as she gave him the card, but I think he should keep it as the card was a present."

The dilemma has since divided Instagram, with people on both sides of the argument.

One person said: "No. It was a gift. If she’d given his a pair of pants or a car, would she expect half? I’d swerve her tbh, sounds like a divvy."

A second commented: "She shouldn’t expect anything, as the poster said the card was a gift. You don’t give to receive!"

"What’s awkward? He won the money! Maybe if she wasn’t demanding it he might have treated her," chimed in somebody else.

"Keep the money it was a gift it’s like saying I bought you a bottle of wine and because I like it I will have half," wrote another opinionated social media user.

However, some people think that it would be 'right' to share the prize.

"They should spilt up. It was a gift, she isn't owed anything. But if he cares about her, he'd be happy to share or spend at least some on an experience for both of them. Her demanding a share and him not wanting to give her anything does not bode well for the future," said one person.

Another Instagrammer wrote: "I would share with my partner if he had bought me a winning ticket. Most likely use it towards a shared experience, like a holiday."

"An inexpensive lottery ticket as a gift gives some insight to the gift giver’s character."

Commenting on a person's character based on the cost of the gifts they give, especially without knowing details of their financial circumstances, gives some insights to the commenter's character :-)

The gift is his. Period.

Hers is a “You Owe Me” gift-giving. She gives you a potato and then she’s entitled to your steak.

Two idiots there - her for expecting half and him for not making the offer - they may as well split because it’ll never work.

When I knew my wife was going to be the one, all that was mine became hers too. W/o that trust, it would have been pointless to stay together or marry.

“When I knew my wife was going to be the one, all that was mine became hers too.”

We had friends that would keep everything separate - we couldn’t figure that out. (Although they now are all divorced - so maybe they knew better!?)

I’ll help my wife on her paying projects. I’ll joke with her that she owes me $75 for my hours. (Yes - it all gets thrown into one pot).

I must admit though, after 32 years of being married - if she ever decides to leave me it will be a mess seeing as we haven’t kept track of anything!

(No it won’t - she can have it all!)

I share your sentiments. After 31 years. I take the words of the comedian who said, “If my wife leaves me, I’m going with her.”

I noticed the same thing - those who keep separate accounts and track of who owns what usually don’t last - my wife earned less than half of what I did before we retired and the retirement accounts reflect that - but we look at the aggregate total as “ours” - and like you, if it ever came down to it, I’d sign everything away for her benefit.

I looked at the article after I posted. Such a row over 500 pounds? That might cover half your heating bill in London.

Heh. While I was dating my wife we went to a bar/grill that had an open comedy mike, unbeknowest to us at the time. She had told me a funny joke a few dates prior, but was too embarrassed to tell it. But she prodded me up to tell it. Based on the audience applause, I/we won! $50 coupon for our next visit! (Yes - I took her back for free dinners!)

Yes, can cause a dilemma of sorts...

I was using a suppliers season tickets and somehow my program number was drawn at halftime and I was one of the 3 to get a shot from half court for a million bucks(??) (lot of money in the mid 70s <: <: <:), naturally my best 1st excuse was I was in street shoes, my 2nd was I did tip a few Buds at the time so was probably slightly off(probably helped rather than hindered) but I did make the layup for a hamburger or something like that.

The ‘real’ dilemma being whose money would it have REALLY been?
The supplier of the ticket, the company I worked for as I had gotten the ticket ‘through’ them?

Probably made myself a lot happier so now I can say that

“I BLEW THE SHOT” so as not to create a problem...

Like a 50/50 raffle at a charity event...I may but the ticket but I just donate the cost as - in my Drinking Days mind - if one were to win the drawing, the ‘correct’ thing to do would be to buy a drink (or soda) for the ‘crowd’ and then ‘give’ the rest to the charity....

Because you know you would try to claim the recipient’s winnings? I like your honesty.

In theory he’ll be more than paid back. That doesn’t comport with contemporary general female behavior. In general, the custom has become, “What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine.”

A woman was afraid to fly to Las Vegas. Some acquaintances let her ride with them (about a 500 mile round trip). She won a multi million dollar slot prize and said it was God’s will. She gave nothing to the people who made it possible. There are some cheap bastards/bitches out there!

I have a ‘casino buddy’. Way back when we started splitting whatever whoever won. We didn’t discuss it or anything, we just started doing it. I won $600 on a 4 card keno machine and when I cashed out I handed him $300. We’ve been doing it ever since....no matter who wins. It’s worked out well.

She should dump him...and then he would win twice.
Men marry for love, women for resources.
500 is cheap to find out about a prospective mate...that’s winning too.
