A woman's response to her boyfriend winning National Lottery money has gone viral, after it divided the internet.
The issue was shared on the MoneySavingExpert Instagram - a website founded by Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis.
"My brother’s girlfriend gave him a National Lottery scratchcard as a Christmas gift, and he won £500.
"She thinks he should give her some of the money as she gave him the card, but I think he should keep it as the card was a present."
The dilemma has since divided Instagram, with people on both sides of the argument.
One person said: "No. It was a gift. If she’d given his a pair of pants or a car, would she expect half? I’d swerve her tbh, sounds like a divvy."
A second commented: "She shouldn’t expect anything, as the poster said the card was a gift. You don’t give to receive!"
"What’s awkward? He won the money! Maybe if she wasn’t demanding it he might have treated her," chimed in somebody else.
"Keep the money it was a gift it’s like saying I bought you a bottle of wine and because I like it I will have half," wrote another opinionated social media user.
However, some people think that it would be 'right' to share the prize.
"They should spilt up. It was a gift, she isn't owed anything. But if he cares about her, he'd be happy to share or spend at least some on an experience for both of them. Her demanding a share and him not wanting to give her anything does not bode well for the future," said one person.
Another Instagrammer wrote: "I would share with my partner if he had bought me a winning ticket. Most likely use it towards a shared experience, like a holiday."
So, if the ticket was a loser, would he owe her half the cost of the ticket?
£500? Jeez, if he’s smart he’ll split it with her. From that gesture, he’ll be more than paid back.
If this is the only thing that is dividing western society, somehow I think we will be ok.
this is the reason I do not give lotto/lottery tickets as gifts....
Same reason I don't give coupons to the "Mustang Ranch" as gifts.
Regards,
Kick her ass out of his house and go find a decent partner...
I had a friend who took his girlfriend on a date to a casino. His slot machine won him $15,000. Kn the drive home she said she didn’t know what she was going to do with her half of the money.
He dumped her.
Whats hers is hers
Whats his is half hers
Thats women logic
Bypass it altogether, be much happier.
she should dump him right quick....he’s shown his true side....and for such a little bit of money.
Sometimes it’s just a friend thing. A buddy and I take a road trip every year and we usually hit a casino on the way. If I lose and he wins he shares half of his winnings with me, and vice versa. It’s always just seemed like the right thing to do.
The posted comments say a lot about the warped values of those individuals posting them.
Agree. End the relationship.
Cheap lesson to find out who he really is. She shouldn’t even need to ask. Says a lot about her too.
Imagine the divorce battle down the road that is being avoided.
#8. Did the guy stop the car when he “dumped her” or was it a “Chicago exit”?
Lol. I think it was a day or two later. He said she went apeshit over it.
£500 well first the royals will take their £498 then the Boyfriend can split the £2 with the GF.
I agree with all you say - it’s amazing how selfish and ungrateful people can be. If I was in his shoes, my first reaction to winning would have been to offer her half. If I was in her shoes, it never would have entered my mind that I deserved half because I bought the ticket as a gift for him.
Guess he threw her out of the car at the local zoo and she landed in apeshit. Good aim!! Good riddance!
An inexpensive lottery ticket as a gift gives some insight to the gift giver’s character.
