California's top energy bosses soon will decide when to snuff out natural gas flames in new homes.
The seismic move toward omitting some gas appliances comes as the California Energy Commission retools state building codes for energy-efficient homes.
The agency now plans to tighten rules on natural gas for home heating and hot water, a code update that would take effect in 2023.
Environmental groups want a complete ban on natural gas in new homes, but the state commission has signaled that isn't likely right now.
The California Building Industry Association, a trade group whose members develop 85% of new buildings in the state, is girding for ever-tougher rules over the next five years.
"The writing's on the wall," said Bob Raymer, technical director with the industry group. "They're going to want electric space and water heating come 2026."

As usual, our side will debate the issue at hand, and, as usual lose (since we’ll be labeled as on the side of CO2 emissions, rightly or wrongly).
What we SHOULD be debating is how to identify and then remove the people doing the this command-type master planning...as they have NO BUSINESS in dictating to others how to live.
What are you trying to do...confuse things with facts! Given that the leftists block every new power plant construction project, where do they think the new power will come from? If they say "solar panels", there's going to be some disappointed (and cold) home buyers in CA.
This makes total good sense. They have all that extra electricity just sitting around, might as well use it.
I used to think Californians were “just more liberal” than the rest of us
But I realize now, the one-party control and ideological bubble is maintained through electoral fraud and manipulation.
Its why the leftists there can be so much more confident in their aggressive policies
Time to invest in a nice gas or coal-fired electricity plant in Nevada, just across the border.
Because of its mandates, California is already forced to import a large share of its electrical power. This amount will simply rise with time.
And we can cook it and keep warm by burning our own shit.
They are either
Morons
or
Evil
or
Both.
Face it, they want us GONE.
It’s a good thing California has cheap electricity!
Where in the hell id CA. planning on finding all of the electricity?? Of course electricity is WAY MORE expensive than gas, EVERYTHING in my home is natural gas GOD I can’t wait to get the hell out of this state!! COMMIEFORNIA!!
Dumb....Natural gas is clean.
They’ll still burn gas and coal. But it has to be at the power plant, and then the homeowner may use the electricity while claiming they are gas and coal free. They may also use their electric car, claiming it is not coal fired.
Good, more and cheaper natural gas for us non-Californians.
“Because it makes so much sense to further burden their already unstable electric grid with more people using electricity to heat their water, food, and homes. “
CA already has an electricity grid that has neither the generating or transmission capacity to keep up with peak demand for shutdown reduced 2020.
And now they are going to add millions of electric cars to that grid, as well as millions of households ?
Get out of the blue areas !
Total failure is overdetermined !
still, Californication has halted 95% of new home construction anyway..... excepting for big apartment projects in crowded areas
(and then they whine about their “homeless population”)
Californication’s political hacks can talk out of at least 13 sides of their mouths, often at the same time too
lies lies lies deceptions and more lies
Of course the Kalif sheep will accept this.
“Scientific American”:
Neither Scientific, or American.
Should be renamed: “Socialist, Globalist Propagandist”
An actual science based article would have discussed the relative efficiencies of gas vs. electric.
It would have discussed the fact that carbon dioxide is necessary to all life on this planet, that it is not a pollutant.
It would have discussed whether the ‘fossil fuels’ used to produce and transport their beloved solar panels and windmills is actually higher than what it would be if it was used directly to produce energy at its point of use.
But instead, they merely echo what the politicians and the Gaia hugging activists say.
They're also trying to drive the price of solar down by forcing everyone to get it.
Some of the more enterprising individuals will burn home heating oil. Yes, you'll have to truck it in from somewhere else but one delivery could cover you for the whole year. You could even use it in your diesel car.
ROTFLMFAO!!!
Electric heating?? Yeah, they can’t keep the light son in that God forsaken State.
Who voted for this ? Besides their wacky governor If it was members of the state legislature or a state bureaucracy get their names out in public view
Leftists love franchise fees.
I believe bidding for the future electric grid rights for San Diego starts at $62 million per year.
That probably works out to around $300/year/family of four.
If you’d like some electricity for your San Diego home too, it will be extra, probably around 15-20 cents per kilowatt hour.
Bingo!
I have been telling every one of my family members (who will listen) that this is exactly what they want, to get rid of those stinking peasants from their spaces.
De Blasio’s actions on New Years Eve was actual proof for their tiny little minds.
