Life in the Year 1999. Fascinating video made in 1967. Lots of predictions that came true too!
As predicted in the year 1967. Basically a glorified commercial for Philco-Ford, it does reflect the optimism of that time that technology would make life better. Such predictions at that time normally thought technology would change rapidly while our social relationships would remain static. Attempting to peer into the future is always a fools effort, since we are all children of our time, even those of us who are highly critical of our time. The past is a different country and the future is an unknown country that we make day by day by our choices.
With Star Trek (the original) at least two things became real...”communicators” (cell phones) and SD cards.
I used to show this in my humanities classes around 1999. The only prediction that didn’t come true, IIRC, was the proliferation of personal jet planes. In all the other predictions, how the technology worked was a bit off, but what the technology was supposed to do was things (online billing, home education, etc) that were happening in 1999.
I was only 6 years old when this video came out. It was a time of dreams, the “space race”, and full-throttle towards what the “future” held in store. Amazing times to have lived through!
Interesting to see how predictions 32 years into the future looked in 1967.
I wonder what predictions people would make for the year 2053, from our vantage point here in 2021.
Good points. I was “trekkie” when the (original) Star Trek came out in the 60’s. Good times....
I’ve never been a “Trekkie” but I really enjoyed the original series. Spock’s performances were outstanding...and Yoeman Rand still gets my heart to thumping! ;-)
OK, back to the video.
One funny bit was the kid getting bored with the training video and speeding it up. I was just annoyed that this video wasn't hosted on Youtube so it didn't have a speed contol to pick up the pace.
I am coming to the conclusion that Blade Runner is going to be pretty close: Chinese instead of Japanese in the background though.
Me too. I remember watching it or another movie like it in class when I was in first grade.
It was the same year that my grandfather died. He was born in 1880, a few months after Edison invented the light bulb and years before the invention of radio or the airplane. He was already an adult when the Wright brothers flew the first airplane at Kitty Hawk and lived to see men orbit the Earth. If he had lived for two more years he would have seen men walk on the moon. Now those were really amazing times to have lived through.
The singer in Puerto Rico was amazing.
Star Trek also had these little tablet devices - watch how often someone hands Captain Kirk a tablet for him to read something or sign off on something.

You’re right... Nailed what computers would do - but not how small or efficient they would become... the whole flashing lights thing was funny...

Just this morning I watched an episode of The 21st Century with Walter Cronkite that was about the home of the future. I was struck by how concerned people were with privacy back then. They would be very disappointed by how things have worked out.
Guess Prince got it wrong, too.
