The year of the coronavirus was a major disaster for professional sports as every league suffered ratings declines, and lost billions in revenue in 2020.
TV viewership was not off by just a little, either. It was off an average of 50 percent over last year’s numbers. Even though many Americans were stuck at home as their jobs and cities shut down, TV viewership for sports still cratered.
According to Front Office Sports, one of golf’s big games, the U.S. Open, lost 56 percent of its viewers over 2019. Basketball suffered greatly, as well. The NBA finals were down 49 percent over last year. Tennis’ Open also cratered, losing 45 percent over 2019’s games. But the worst of all was Hockey’s Stanley Cup. The NHL’s big game lost a whopping sixty percent over the 2019 championship series.
Thus far the NFL is also cratering, being down at least seven percent over last year. It has been so consistently bad this year that advertisers are starting to rise up to demand concessions for their high advertising spending since viewership has been falling each week.

The plebeians are getting tired of being placated with bread and circuses. The ruling class in this country is despicable and totalitarian.
Get woke, go broke. Too bad, so sad.
YAWN
It’s okay... after all, their Marxist “black lives” matter more to them than our dollars..
Not enough.

Advertising money drives the machine, not ticket sales. The goose that laid the golden eggs is dying, and not of CoVid.
People quarantined at home with TVs at record numbers and pro sports craters. Geniuses.
Being under house arrest for over nine months, I would have welcomed the opportunity for diversion, and I am a moderate sports fan, but the behavior of the players turns me off. I have not watched one down or inning or line shift of professional sports this year. I am turned off. Eff ‘em. Basketball turned me off years ago with the showboating and egotism. So not one tip off or foul shot either.
I have an interesting take on this. Of all the major sports, the NHL had the most low-key idiocy related to BLM in 2020 ... but they also have a fan base that would more repulsed than any others. I didn’t watch a single Stanley Cup playoff game in 2020 ... for the first time in 32 years.
I also think a live fan experience is more integral to hockey than other sports. I can see why TV audiences would be small for games without fans in attendance.
Wonderful news!!!
To heck with them and the movie/t.v. industry.
The time for the circuses is over. The circus isn’t fun anymore.
Golf engaged in very little wokeness - if any - but got punished by a general societal trend away from sitting around watching televised sports.
Mitch will get em’ a good tax break...
Couldn’t have happened to a better bunch of overpaid crybabies.
Go woke, go broke!
May 2020 be more of a financial disaster for the awaken pros. (NFL, NBA whatever?)
Playing Golf is fun. Watching Golf is boring.
