VANCOUVER CANUCKS PRESSURED TO CHANGE LOGO ... Over Cultural Appropriation Concerns
TMZ ^

Washington's NFL team, Cleveland's MLB team ... and now the Vancouver Canucks?

The NHL squad is now feeling pressure to change ... this after an Indigenous Studies expert claims the main logo featured on the team's uniforms is cultural appropriation.

Sean Carleton -- a University of Manitoba history professor -- spelled out his concerns in a lengthy social media thread this week ... explaining why he feels the team's orca logo should be replaced.

Carleton says the whale -- which was created nearly 3 decades ago and has elements of artwork designed by Haida in it -- is hurting indigenous people.

I think they should just keep the whale logo and change their name to the Fatties.

There was never any good reason to change this perfectly acceptable logo:

The color scheme was excellent, too.

The Canucks name is worse. Obviously discriminates against the many fine NHL players of Russian origin.

I guess I am completely lacking in sensitivity (. . . sigh . . . grin . . . giggle . . . uncontrollable laughter . . . rolling on the floor. . . .)

if you catch my drift. . . .

LOL, yes what about the nickname of Carolina Hurricanes, or the Miami Hurricanes college team? Where is our sensitivity there?

As we see, there are nicknames besides Indian nicknames, which will be deemed offensive by someone.

I live in Texas so calling a team the Yankees isn’t inclusive as it refers to people living in the Northeast.

For people in Latin America, you qualify.

"to foreigners a yankee is an American. To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner. To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner. To Easterners a Yankee is a New Englander. To New Englanders a Yankee is a Vermonter. And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast." (E.B. White)

This was sooooo representative of the late 70s; bring 'em back.

I forgot about those. As a lifelong Kings fan, I missed the home "Dr. Denton pajamas" look:

I’ve seen other objections to other nicknames, such as :

1. Pittsburgh Steelers is offensive to real steel workers.
2. Green Bay Packers is offensive to real meat packers.

3. New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Angels, and San Diego Padres are all offensive to the Catholic Church.

4. Dallas Cowboys is offensive to real cowboys.

5. Las Vegas Raiders, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are said by some to be glorifying criminal activity.

6. Boston Celtics is offensive to the real Celtic people.

7. Notre Dame Fighting Irish offends the Irish and is also glorification of violence, because of “Fighting”.

8. Names such as San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia 76ers, and New England Patriots, are a nod to a history we are not supposed take any pride in. So those names are clearly offensive to the politically correct crowd.

9. All of the animal nicknames offend the PETA types.

So we can see, there are many many names which offend somebody.

Buffalo Bills must be offensive to the memory of Buffalo Bill Cody. But maybe that doesn’t matter, because liberals could certainly find instances of Bill being bigoted, racist, not being environmentally friendly in the old West, etc. etc.

The Canuck logo is based on Northwest Indian art styles, which you would think is a tribute, not something to be banned. And the Seattle Seahawks logo is very similar. I suppose it won't be long before someone demands that it be changed as well.

The ironic thing about all of this political correctness surrounding Native American names and imagery is that removing them will push Native Americans and their culture further into the margins.
