To buy modern art you must have wallet openness.

Re: Art that went for $30M in Post 5.
No one talks about two huge scams involved with such "art". One is money laundering.
The other is buying a painting, loaning it to a museum and writing of the value of the "loan" on your income taxes as a charitable "donation". Over time the taxpayers have in effect paid for your painting.

Many “modern art” fans look down on other art.

LOL.
I remember a long time ago when I first moved to NYC back in the late 70's, there was a couple who collected modern art. They were school teachers if I recall correctly.
Lived in a tiny apartment but had an incredibly valuable collection. Bought it all from artists who became well-respected but assembled their collection when they artists were unknown.
You might remember that story.

I agree with you. Some modern art is quite good. Robert Hughes wrote a book that became a PBS documentary called "The Shock of the New" where he tried to separate the wheat from the chaff in modern art. I think he did a really good job and I agreed with most of his choices.
He later became really disheartened by how the modern art market became more about financial appreciation than art appreciation and made another documentary on that.

Lots of quality art in the D&D Manuals.
I enjoyed the Dragonlance novels as well.

That’s pretty cool. I don’t know if I’d pop 30,000,000 on it. But then I don’t live in that stratosphere. I’d definitely drop 50 bucks on it.

Speaking of scams, remember Mark Rothko. I have one of his paintings (a print, of course) hanging in my living room.
IIRC, his work went up greatly in value when he committed suicide. Didn't his dealer give him the pistol he used?
He's not a scam though...love his paintings

Herb was a postal worker and Dorothy was a librarian (it says in Wiki. Not school teachers.).

"Fantasy art", much as I like Roger Dean, is not art. It's illustration. Art is art. Illustration is craft.

Cleaning out my basement. Found ALL my old Doc Savage, The Avenger, Conan, Kull, books. Thought to sell them but they don’t bring much. Still, hard to find online.
They featured the art of Frazzetta, Bama and others.
