Hong Kong (CNN)In a brightly lit restaurant in downtown Hong Kong, the meaty smell of fried spam fills the air.
As other staff prepare for the lunchtime rush, a cook is putting the finishing touches to a bowl of instant noodles, egg and spam, a dish so popular and iconic of local cuisine that it has its own shorthand in Cantonese (chaan daan mihn). But this bowl is different: despite being topped with two pink slabs of luncheon meat, it doesn't actually contain any animal products. The "spam" is vegan, a meat-free alternative developed by OmniFoods, a Hong Kong-based food producer and social enterprise. Like its US-based competitors Beyond Meat and Impossible, OmniFoods targets both vegetarians and meat-eaters with its plant-based foods, seeking to provide an ethical alternative that is less-environmentally damaging than meat.

I believe it.....and thank you for your service sir.
Have always loved SPAM. This is urban myth built up by other food competitors. Fried is best.
Not derided by me! I’ve known it from my youth. In a tip of the hat to modern sophistication, I put my fried spam and American cheese on white sandwiches into the panini maker
Spam was a regular feature for meals when I was growing up in the 1950s and 60s. My wife still buys it from time to time to have for a quick fix meal. I remember buying it from the commissary during my tours in Germany and taking it to the field with me as a backup to C-rations. I was a forward observer, thus often away from my artillery battery’s location where we could get hot chow. And we had our sterno stove to heat it up and hot water for coffee.
"Other ingredients"--aka mystery meat.
wrong........ ignorance on display
...baloney...

Which is quite similar, except it is in a casing.
But I’m not a snob and I eat both, occasionally.
Spam and those little 1# formed ‘hams’ are good prepping supplies. If SHTF, it’s comforting to have them in the cupboard, along with canned chicken & tuna. Add some rice or pasta and whatever seasonings are available and you can feed people carbs, fat and protein in an emergency.
...Spam spread...

Run it thru a food processor or mince finely by hand, add relish and mayo or Miracle Whip and mustard. Spam spread.
Gotta fry the baloney.....its a whole different experience.

Yep. Variety is the spice.
Or if you believe everything you read.
You mean Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, and Spam?
You left out a couple of spams, but yes.
You really ought to lie down for a while.
Read my post.
>>a truly tasty hot dog, sausage, or anything similar
Kobi beef is not a hot dog, sausage, or something similar (i.e. processed meats).
You're not equating Kobi beef with Spam, are you?
“My wife won’t let it (SPAM) in the house.”
Then I suggest you not fry scrapple. We had a friend at Ft Knox whose wife had to leave the house every time he cooked it.
We have 4 cans of SPAM in the camping box and 4 in the pantry. Most of the flavored ones are not very good other than the BLACK PEPPER and HOT AND SPICY. Eggs, rice or fried rice, a little kimchi on the side. Yummo. Great breakfast. Mix up some brown sugar and mustard and spread on SPAM before frying. Kinda messy but really good.
I don’t plan to eat Synthetic Processed Artificial Meat (spam) anytime soon. I eat real food.
You can eat cow pies for all I care, numbnutz.
