Hong Kong (CNN)In a brightly lit restaurant in downtown Hong Kong, the meaty smell of fried spam fills the air.
As other staff prepare for the lunchtime rush, a cook is putting the finishing touches to a bowl of instant noodles, egg and spam, a dish so popular and iconic of local cuisine that it has its own shorthand in Cantonese (chaan daan mihn). But this bowl is different: despite being topped with two pink slabs of luncheon meat, it doesn't actually contain any animal products. The "spam" is vegan, a meat-free alternative developed by OmniFoods, a Hong Kong-based food producer and social enterprise. Like its US-based competitors Beyond Meat and Impossible, OmniFoods targets both vegetarians and meat-eaters with its plant-based foods, seeking to provide an ethical alternative that is less-environmentally damaging than meat.

That craps worse than the liverworst they made in Germany after WW2. Matter of fact, I would sooner eat that wood pulp before I had another taste of Spam.
Imagine how hungry, how hard the times were for balut to become a comfort food.
Spam spread was originally called Deviled Spam, but apparently the Underwood company (makers of deviled ham) got after them, so they had to change the name.
You couldn’t find it on the shelves about six months ago.

Why do people who hate the idea of meat always want to turn everything the eat into fake meat?
I noticed the margarine we’ve eaten for decades is now labeled “plant butter”. What a crock. No, butter comes from animals. Like, duuuuuh. Everyone has known this for over 150 years.

Anyway, we keep Spam in the pantry in case of SHTF. Been there for years.
Growing up in the 60’s-70’s sometimes mom and dad had little money with five kids for meat. We had a garden and canned and froze vegetables but any meat was sometimes hard to come by for the supper table. Mom would buy two or thee cans of spam and cut it up in thin slices and bake in the oven with a brown sugar and mustard sauce on it. Served with green beans and mashed potatoes it was a good meal.
My kids and wife won’t touch it though. My wife lived with her grandmother and dad and they never ate spam in that house. I keep a can order two in the cabinet and will slice it up and make me a spam, cheese and Mayo sandwich at times.
Spam 25% Lower Sodium for me. Slice it up, cook it, served with corn tortillas and Tabasco. Yum!
