PORTLAND, Ore —Wilson High School in Southwest Portland will be renamed after a Black woman who made a historical impact on society.
The board of Portland Public Schools decided to change the school's name in July in response to the racial justice movement that followed the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Built in 1954, the high school was named for former Pres. Woodrow Wilson, whose administration segregated federal offices. Wilson also wrote a book considered sympathetic to the Ku Klux Klan.
A committee tasked with renaming Wilson High has come up with five candidates after whom the school could be renamed. The committee is asking for feedback from the community on the candidates, which can be submitted online through Jan. 1, 2021.
Here are the five finalists and information about them from various websites:
Beatrice Morrow Cannady worked as a reporter and editor for the Advocate, an African-American newspaper,(snip)
Mercedes Deiz became the first Black female lawyer in Oregon in 1960. She was also the state's first Black female district court judge and first Black woman to be elected as a county circuit court judge.(snip)
Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist and women's rights activist who was born into slavery in New York.(snip)
Ida B. Wells was an early leader of the civil rights movement.(snip)
Harriet Wilson was the first African American person, male or female, to publish a novel in North America. Her novel "Sketches from the Life of a Free Black" was published anonymously in 1859 in Boston, Mass.
The high school noted in a form on its website, "Choosing to honor Harriet will allow us to reclaim the name Wilson, while at the same time turning its meaning from one of severe racism to one of hope and inclusion."

Whoever they pick couldn’t be a worse racist than Wilson.
Shirley Hemphill.
“making history” is getting more and more petty and pathetic.
MLK failed. It’s all race all the time in America 2020.
Alveda King
Marge Sanger High? She is all inclusive.
Until Obama came along, Woodrow Wilson was the single worst president in American history. So in this case, I’ll give the Portlandia revolutionaries a pass.
Meanwhile, all things named after brave Indians have to be changed to something else.
Conveniently buried the lead that Wilson was the prototype Progressive Democrat, anti Constitution pro big government, a model for the New New Deal kinds of things the Biden Cabal claim to want to do. The Left should love him
Damn...you beat me to it!
How about Harriet Tubman.
Oh, wait. She was a Republican
Omarosa...remember her?

Gotta throw Joycelyn (”safer bullets”) Elders into the hat.
I graduated from Wilson in 1972, and I personally don’t care if they rename it Angela Davis High School. Portland was a nice place 40 or 50 years ago, but I’m done with it.
Name it after Harriet Tubman, a gun toting Republican who shot Democrats.
Wilson segregated offices. BLM/Pantifa wants to segregate, too. So what’s the problem?
Actually, now that I think about it, I’d like the school to be named after Lana Kane.

Can you imagine ferrying a child through a Title I Spanish-immersion school, through a free-form middle school with no learning going on whatsoever, to Wilson's open drug den and Pimpology 101.
That. Is. Portland.
When China starts lobbing nukes in the next 5 years I fully expect PDX to walk out of their hovels and greet the end with outstretched arms.
It's a shame because it used to be a beautiful city...
