A controversy over the safety of owning Czechoslovakian wolfdogs is afoot following the fatal mauling of a 74-year-old Italian woman, who was reportedly killed by her five dogs.
Mariangela Zaffino’s body was found by her daughter in the northern Italy apartment where the pair lived with their handful of canines, according to the Telegraph.
The victim’s daughter and local authorities said the five wolfdogs — named Ares, Aylen, Artù, Aragorn and Apache — had not showed signs of aggression prior to Zaffino’s death. What prompted the attack is unclear, though the animals have been removed from the home by law enforcement. The fate of the dogs hasn’t been decided.
Neighbors had reportedly questioned the wisdom of keeping the roughly 50-pound dogs in a small apartment. Czechoslovakian wolfdogs are a mix between Alsatians and Carpathian wolves. Known in Slovaki as Ceskoslovensky Vlciak, they were first bred to be used as guard dogs in the 1950s and require a great deal of exercise. They’re also said to be highly intelligent, but difficult to train.
Fabrizio Rondalino reportedly told the newspaper Corriere della Sera that he spent 18-months caring for a wolfdog and doesn’t think they should exist — let alone be kept as pets.
“It is a man-made invention,” Rondalino said. “One of the worst breeds created.”
According to Rondalino, the dogs have a “highly developed predatory instinct” and should be sterilized and phased out of existence. He gave his dog to a friend who is a professional animal trainer.

“But they’ve never hurt a soul!”
Aw, what a sweetie.
Dogs have been domesticated for 30,000 to 40,000 years. Wolves have been domesticated for, um, let’s see...zero years. There seems to be something of a disconnect there.
Freaking stunning dogs.
Hey, everyone loves German Shepherds and they’re wonderful, right?
[we must be out of pit bull attack hysteria]
How do they know she didn’t die and the hungry dogs ate her afterwards?
There are folks that ought not have GSDs. He’ll, there are folks that ought not have any unaltered dog.
A lot of assumptions being made here. They are a medium sized working dog and are apparently not all that "wolf-like" beyond appearance.
These are decent dogs temperament-wise when compared to Dobies, Pit's, or even rat terriers...
Weirder yet...”they” choked her to death.

Tasmanian Devils are marsupials.

I love my working dogs and giants.
Sadly, that has happened.
I would hope, God forbid, if it were me, no one would blame my dogs.
On the other hand, the boy Dobe opens his locked food storage box all the time and helps himself so he’d be fine.
We gave him a great life. He was almost 14 when we had a Vet friend put him down. Up until that last year, he could still give the local squirrels and rabbits a run for their lives.
I've had them for almost 50 years and even the most cruelly abused rescues never so much as raised a lip to me.
Let me assist...
That is an exceptional length of life for a GSD.
You were almost as blessed as he was.
Still, I grieve for your loss.
Fabrizio sounds like a nutjob
Who’s Fabrizio?
I’ve got an Uber-liberal sister. Her dog was an unsocialized moron. Had no idea what it’s name was. One time, my mom and I were shouting at it to get its attention so that it wouldn’t run into the street. My sister came unglued on both of us for traumatizing her dog.
