Costumes,as such, mean little to me.The overall quality of the production is what counts.Downton Abbey was absolutely outstanding...but not quite as good as Upstairs/Downstairs.Of course the Brits have the theater in their blood so outstanding productions shouldn't come as a surprise.

Now that winter's here I'll be binge-watching both of them.

My wife and I are huge fans, and — as a dude — I never thought I'd enjoy it.

Bates, and the Dowager, are my two favorite characters. And BTW...if you like Downton Abbey you'll *love* Upstairs/Downstairs. Just sayin'...

We have also watched “Bordertown” and enjoyed it too.

We recently watched on Netflix a movie based on a true story of a Norwegian soldier/spy during WWII when Norway was occupied by the Nazi’s. I would absolutely recommend:

“The 12th Man”

Jonathan Reyes Meyers(King Henry VII from the Tudors) plays the head Nazi in Norway.

We also watch almost exclusively British productions anymore. There’s just no comparison to the drivel that American networks are putting out. Plus they are usually clearly devoid of “social engineering”.

One show I hadn’t seen listed but really enjoyed was Vanity Fair. The main character is very saucy and made me laugh often. Costumes and settings are gorgeous, and the opening credits, while not seeming to have much to do with the series, is captivating and haunting on its own.

Another was set in the 1960s, so not quite as distant of a period to cover, but really well done, was The Royal, an 8 season series about a seaside community hospital by in Yorkshire. The setting is beautiful. The general surgeon, Mr. Rose, is worth watching all by himself! But all of the characters are interesting and complex. Highly enjoyed that one!

Glad that you’ve seen and enjoyed it! They were perfection, weren’t they?

I assume you’ve watched Victoria. I’m looking forward to the new season, hopefully airing in the next few months.

All of my grandparents were from Norway. My parents would read me “Snow Treasure” to me. About children sledding gold down to the ships to evade the NAZI’s. (True story).

One of my dad’s cousins was a kid in the resistance and he hid in a pile of coal when the NAZI’s came to his home. Similar scene in the book!

My dad asked him years later (1970’s) about what he had done.

“Nope. Nobody knows - not even my wife. They will never know.”

Of course I always imagine him involved in the escape of the gold, or the bombing of the heavy water plant.

Years later he was a very successful business man. He told my dad “We have to register our guns in Norway even now. But that is the FIRST thing the Germans did - was go to the town hall and find all of the gun owners and get their guns. Everyone in town knows that I hunt. So - I have my 1954 30-30 rifle registered as the law requires.”
.
.
.
They don’t know about any of my other guns though!

Thanks for the suggestion. We’ve been looking for a new addiction lately, so we’ll check it out.

Did you catch any of the changes the writers behind Dicksenian made from the novels to fit their smash up. I noticed in Dickensian Miss Barbary from Bleak House was dumped by her fiance Boythorn. In the novel Miss Barbary left Boythorn when Miss Honoria got pregnant with Esther Summerson. Boythorn never found another woman and kept a flame for Miss Barbary.

Yes. I got caught up in A Place to Call Home. It’s a real soap opera. Actually I’ve watched several Australian & New Zealand series. Have you seen Good Karma Hospital?

IIRC Upstairs/Downstairs consists of about 100 episodes in total. Not all of them were great (IMO) but at its best it is,IMO,even better than Downton.

Also,I found this clip for you:

Downton Abbey 2.0

You would love “The 12th Man”. Some of your relatives are probably portrayed in the movie.

“Countdown to War”, with Gandalf, playing Hitler, is an excellent show, with what went on behind the scenes in the days for Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939.
