Mashed Turnips Are Even Better Than Potatoes
lifehacker ^ | 12/21/2020 | Vaughn Stafford Gray

Buckle up everybody, for I am here to defend and exalt turnips. In fact, I’d go so far as to claim that turnips, when mashed, are better than their potato counterparts, and a far more interesting vehicle for gravy. Cooked turnips are firm yet velvety, slightly nutty, and bring a bit more oomph to your holiday spread. But, full disclosure, my not all of my turnip-eating Christmases have been merry.

Cauliflower isn’t bad either. Good colonization food!

I really need to try this. I live on mashed cauliflower so I bet I’ll like mashed turnips. I use turnips as the potato alternative when crock potting pot roasts.

Maybe next year. I don’t usually save any deer for stew meat or roasts. I cut steaks, chops and grind burger and get dry beef made. I’ll just have to remember to get some burgionon seeds this spring and give it try.

When I was teenager my best friend’s grandmother made them for Thanksgiving and I gave them a try. I fell in love with them and begged my mother to start making them. My dad was ecstatic because he had never told my mother that he liked them. From then on it was a staple and I still love them.

My Grandmother would make mashed turnips as a side dish on occasion.
Usually when she had grown an abundance in her garden.
It was very good

I’m still not sure why Kale is ‘all that’ for so many.
Maybe because it’s easy to grow and has colorful varieties, as with that purple-crimson ornamental cabbage.
These two plants also make good compost, if compost (vs a side dinner dish) is your actual goal.
