Democrats from Day One have always been the party of opposition to the US Constitution -- anti-Federalists, anti-Washington administration, Nullifiers, slavers, secessionists declaring & waging war against the United States.
The fact is you Democrats hate the United States and the party which defends our Constitution -- Federalists-Whigs-Republicans.
In 1860 you Democrats wanted no restrictions on slavery -- none -- and you went berserk when the first openly anti-slavery President was elected.
Today only the reasons have changed -- Democrats want no restrictions -- none -- on any number of nefarious actions, from abortion to open borders to voting fraud to "free stuff" for Democrat voters and endless punishment for Republican small businesses.
Sure, on occasion, even today Democrats will claim to be "strict constructionists", but it's a total sham.
They only want "strict construction" when they can weaponize it against political opponents.
Once they themselves are in power, Democrats do whatever the h*ll they want, Constitution be d*mn*d.

No, but you misquoted -- Democrats were only ever "pro-states rights" when it served their own purposes.
Otherwise, they wanted to dictate national policy from Washington, DC.
Perfect examples are SCOTUS Crazy Roger Tanney's Dred Scott opinions on slavery, Southern Democrats' opposition to admitting Kansas & other territories as free-states, and secessionists' complaints about Northern fugitive slave laws.
The old Federalists were the people who wrote & ratified the new US Constitution in 1777-1779.
They were opposed by anti-Federalists who wanted to keep the weaker Articles of Confederation.
After ratification, most of the old anti-Federalists regrouped, becoming Jeffersonian Democrats and claiming to be "strict constructionists".
But it turned out, "strict construction" was only a weapon against Federalists -- once Democrats themselves came to power, they did whatever the h*ll they wanted, the Constitution be d*mn*d.
