AOC calls Amazon jobs a 'scam' because more than 4,000 of its employees are on food stamps
Business Insider via MSN ^ | 12/19/20 | Kevin Shalvey

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Friday said Amazon's jobs are a "scam" because they're not creating financial security for workers.

"A 'job' that leaves you homeless & on food stamps isn't a job. It's a scam," she said on Twitter.

Ocasio-Cortez referenced a Bloomberg News report detailing how many Amazon warehouse workers struggle to pay bills, with as many as 4,000 on food stamps.

The report said Amazon has turned logistics work from a professional career option to "entry-level" work for many. As Amazon's workforce has soared during the pandemic, safety conditions in its warehouses have failed to keep pace, according to the report.

"This is why 'Amazon jobs' aren't it & we should instead focus our public investments + incentives on small businesses, public infrastructure, & worker cooperatives that actually support dignified life," said Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter.

"Bloomberg's conclusion is false - it violates over 50 years of economic thought, and suspends the law of supply and demand," an Amazon representative told Bloomberg.

everyone and their mother turned to delivery services for income, causing an extreme over saturation of drivers in most markets.

That explains why it has taken 2-3 days to get grocery delivery in two different suburban markets all year long. Before and after the Instacart strike. It explains why I have to take time off from my job to shop in the grocery store, load the cooler with ice, and drive six hours round trip to deliver groceries to my elderly mother from August until now. btw--we are excellent tippers.

I agree, business is business. Betting that a high percentage of Amazon workers are single mothers with several kids to support and no father around.

We could do a couple of things, I would take a hard look at companies like Amazon and Walmart specifically besides the positive change they have created in the economy they have also devastated other areas....crushing the small competitor and paying substandard wages.....

————————————

Eff Walmart in particular. Fired its entire Development staff in Bentonville, and replaced them with H1B Indian trash. Amazon did the same. Nearly impossible to get a developer position with Amazon without being a dot Indian.

On the sales tax issue regardless of who pays it if you two businesses in a city where is forced by law to collect it and another is not that’s an unfair advantage especially when the company who isn’t collecting it is a worldwide corporation

I would be amazed if Amazon doesn’t by this point have nexus in all 50 states, and thus have to pay sales tax. They certainly do here in GA.

Amazon helps small businesses, also. Workers’ Co-ops are fine, but we need competition fir Amazon. My brother is thinking of making 3D printed buildings fr model railroads on Amazon.

Who gives an eff about how long it takes for you to get your garbage delivered. Your comment has absolutely NOTHING to do with how lowly paid and exploited the delivery service driver is. You are part of the problem.

No they see your order, they see the app-generated tip and drivers pass.

And yes InstaCart really effed their drivers hard by allowing tips to be rescinded up to a few days after delivery.

The strike was for that very reason. InstaCart drivers working for free after tips were rescinded.

Would you work for free?

They still let 3rd party sellers from Hong Kong, er Communist China, dominate the marketplace. Still don’t list country of shipping origin in most cases.

I agree it is a pretty great advantage and one which the brick and mortor stores have long complained about.

Although Trey Parker leans a little bit far to the left, South Park hit on this issue years ago.

You definitely should not be in the service industry. Your anger is unhealthy. Most of all, your comments repeatedly reflect a decidedly liberal slant with emphasis on class warfare. Perhaps you should engage in more liberal discussion boards. Maybe you already do.

With respect to Walmart....

It’s a positive to some degree that they offer one-stop shopping at lower prices, but they have created a self fulfilling customer base...

A majority of their customers are lower income and pay for many of the items with government benefits, they turn around and have many of their workers also on food stamps who then spend their money where they work....which lowers their labor costs even more.

They have gone into many smaller and medium size cities, opened a Super Walmart, which drives out local competitors, they import a ton of cheap Chinese made good which helps close down US factories and manufacturers which devastates local economies...

They take their huge profits and fund crazy wacko liberal education policies and support all kinds of social justice causes including gun control...

They support just any increase in minimum wage laws as if to show their benevolence when they can afford it, but realize their smaller competitors can’t which only increases their market share....

I don’t really blame them but except at some point, we have to say enough start paying better wages and buying more American made goods or we will force you to do that...

Going from $135k to nearly nothing due the the bullshit lockdowns and not being able to find gainful employment due to foreigner scum taking American jobs does that to a person. Now piss off.

You are 100% correct, eliminating the middle class has already caused real problems and it’s only going to get worse.....

People get desperate and are told capitalism and free enterprise has ruined their life, they start to believe it and support really fringe socialists....which is exactly what’s happening....

You crush people’s economic future and you end up with a large percentage of people who are drugged addicted and suicidal....which we know to be true...

You forgot Walmart fired it’s entire American white-collar technical and development workforce and replaced them with Indian H1B scum. Target did the same.

I won’t shop at these two traitorous Americans that reserve only the low-level subsistence retail jobs for Americans. Same with any company that replaced Americans with foreign trash. I won’t do business with them.

Correct. She opposed it primarily for the the tax incentives. In her world view,
not fully paying New York’s ridiculous taxes is “giveaway”.

And those thousands of people, based on hiring patterns in Seattle would have been the following: H1B, H4EAD, OPT, L1 and other Indian foreign trash, especially in any development role.

“I don’t really blame them...”

It would be difficult to blame any large retailer from attempting to make as much money as they can for themselves AND their stock holders to which they have a fiduciary responsibility to earn as much $ as they legally can.

Also they argument they destroy smaller business which are unable to compete with them doesn’t carry much wait when you consider the thousands and thousands of people who benefit from the low prices vs the owners of the small businesses which are put in distress by the same aggressive pricing employed by WM and the other box stores.
