It’s a mild, softly glowing December morning in Albany, and I’m at the most beautiful landfill in the world. Well, a former landfill: Albany Bulb, a 33-acre bulb-shaped strip of land protruding into the San Francisco Bay.
Offering both sweeping views of the San Francisco skyline and human-made sculptures crafted from found materials, these days, the Bulb evokes more of a sense of whimsy than it does the desolation of a landfill. Wet dogs pitter-patter gleefully down dirt trails, and children exclaim with wonder as they discover life-size dinosaurs made of driftwood and rebar. On pandemic-era weekends, the parking lot is packed — there’s really no better place in the East Bay to get a safe whiff of fresh air while entertaining your bored children during lockdown.
After treading past a dog beach and towards the west side of the Bulb, I reach one of the peninsula’s most famous landmarks: Mad Marc’s Castle. A fairy wonderland of scavenged rebar, concrete and plaster made by a former Bulb resident (more on the Bulb’s history as a homeless encampment later), the structure’s roof and tower have crumbled a bit over the years, but has taken on new life as a canvas for colorful graffiti art.

Hiking in masks...utter stupidity...
Beats walking on sh*tty sidewalks, I guess.
Many are older....and I think they don't understand.
Well...we went snowshoeing in the mountain air yesterday...people snowshoeing and on cross country skis...WEARING MASKS!

In its first years, it even had methane leaks that would catch on fire from discarded cigarettes during concerts.

That’s nothing. A former landfill became an entire NYC borough.
I tend to cut some slack on that, because there are situations where a mask is requested or required. The easiest way to have it when needed is to wear it. That way you don’t forget it or lose it. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, though, when so many wear it under their nose. What a charade!

Some people are terrified all the time, so they wear a mask in ridiculous settings. You can’t tell people what to be afraid of, especially if they have been conditioned to think that a chronic case of rectal/cranial inversion is normal.
Yeah, right...out in the middle of the snow covered nowhere with clean mountain air you need a mask...Uh huh.

I suppose if they were hours away from civilization it would appear somewhat preposterous, but we do not know that, do we? Let’s hunt them down to tell them how stupid they are. O wait! Their photo just appeared online. How convenient. How fun!

I see it here, but it’s nothing new....freezing cold LOL
They really don’t grasp the whole concept. They should be filling their lungs with fresh air....diluting this silent monster. If God wanted us to wear masks, we’d have gills.
I also see graffiti marring the landscape.
Mask do not work period plus the sun kills viruses in seconds.
