The Marine Corps is set to dissolve three infantry Military Occupational Specialities (MOS) and combine them into one "commando" MOS that can do it all, according to a Marine combat instructor briefed on the upcoming changes.
"They are giving us new protocols and class information," he described.
The shift signifies big changes for the Marine Corps and how it fights wars. Currently, rifleman (0311), machine gunner (0331), and mortarman (0341) are separate MOS's but will be combined some time next year into a designation that at the moment is simply being called 03XX.
Just to get accepted into the Marine Infantry will be tougher for recruits, as the required GT score for Marine Infantry will be raised from 90 to 105. Bootcamp and the School of the Infantry will continue but Marines will get attentional training afterwards.
A current combat instructor who spoke to Connecting Vets on the condition of anonymity described their approach as borrowing from the land warfare proficiencies of Army Rangers combined with the maritime capabilities of the British Royal Marines.
"They even want everyone to qualify on the Royal Marines infantry fitness test, on top of the Marine Corps fitness test," the instructor said. After completing their infantry training, these Marines will then be subjected to a series of training courses that were never available during initial entry training before.
These courses include Mountain Leader, Raid Leader, Assault Climber, and Combat Hunter before receiving Scout-Swimmer training and attending the coxswain course. Finally, Marine Infantrymen will attend some version of the Air Assault course, although the details have yet to be determined.

Commando sounds gay. They are just determined to get rid of the job of “rifleman”.
I can see where fighting the “Club Wars” can be a difficult task....
This will be a good change as long as they KEEP their higher standards high and heighten their ONGOING training.

The Marine Corps has always resisted the idea of “elite” Marines among the rest of the Corps. The tradition has been “every Marine is a rifleman” and anomalies like the Raider battalions were quickly re-absorbed when FDR wasn’t looking.
The only good aspect of this is that young ladies are even less likely to qualify.

Given what’s gone on in Washington D.C. the past dozen or more years between the top tier of our officer corp and politicians and The LEFT’s efforts to dumb down our military I am suspicious about this report.
I now believe that The Left (Democrats) want to diminish the strength of our military any way they can at the behest of their Chinese pals who are giving them lots of money.
Bad idea unless you massively adjust recruiting. Massively.
I can see this as cross training for company weapons but 81mm mortars were at battalion level so they’re going to have to split them from 60mm.
