I can only speak for myself, but after the historic awfulness of 2020, I’d appreciate a gift of great whiskey wrapped up in a bow. I suspect I’m not alone. So I made sure my annual tradition of suggesting several bottles for the holidays was undertaken this year with extra rigor and, of course, adhering to stringent social distancing guidelines for my team of tasters to sniff, sip, and banter our way through the 30-plus candidates to land on this final list of 16.
As always, there’s a range of styles, prices and origins, from Europe to Asia, Kentucky, Philly, and Mexico (yes, for El Whisky). Each has their own virtues. But shared with a special person in your bubble, each can offer a taste to traverse the world, transcend the moment, and warm the mood with a sip of cheer.
BOURBON, TENNESSEE WHISKEYS, AND LOCAL STARS
Old Forester Straight Bourbon. Old Forester has been distilled continuously since 1870 and was the first American whiskey sold by the bottle. There are more complex editions of the brand, but the 86-proof standard remains a great value. This 72% corn-based spirit has bourbon’s classic profile of praline sweetness, fruit and grain, with a back note of tobacco. It’s also about as close to drinking a chocolate-cherry cordial as it gets. 86 proof, $21.99, (PLCB item #3290)

I’m a fan of Henry McKenna 10yr, Bottled-in-Bond. Glad I bought 6 bottles of it when I did at Wine and More, because it is next to impossible to find at a decent price point (I bought it at $32/bottle a few years back).
Yes there is a 100 proof Old Forrester that I hear is not bad. We discovered a great rye from 13th colony which is a boutique distiller out of Plains, GA. Good stuff. We also love the 13th colony Southern Vodka for martinis. And I’m a long time fan girl for Bushmills Black. At my Dad’s wake we handed out shot glasses and gathered round the casket to toast a fine Irish gentleman with it.
Try Willet Pot Still Reserve. If for no other reason than to keep the bottle.
I always have to bitch at Asian friends LOL
They break out the $500 stuff and slam shots!!!
That’s for sippin Viet...
Hard to bitch about folks so generous.. :)
LOL !
my kind of guy.
I’ll give you a little hint. When you are in the nursing home, breathing your last, your biggest regret won’t be spending $13 more for the good stuff.
As I told my friends when they asked if $280 was too much for a week on the island “At this point, I have more money than time”
Wild Turkey 101 can’t get enough on this day.
Kidding, I wait until later in the day.
Bushmills has a smokiness that most Irish whisky's don't have. If I remember right the smokiness comes from anthracite used in its production.
I was at a buddies house.
He had a bottle of Jefferson’s Reserve. I was impressed. I might have to try a bottle.
Have you tried “Writer’s Tears” Irish whiskey? If you like Jameson, you’ll love this one. Also Jameson Cooper’s Croze is a keeper!
Bushmill’s is Protestant whiskey and is not allowed in my home, however humble it is.
LOL!!!
The bottle is definitely a keeper but what’s inside is pretty doggone good too! Willett puts out really good product all around.
When I was in Ireland many years ago in the nineties we were supposed to go to the Bushmills distillery but for some reason we ran out of time. I never cared for Jamesons but Tullamore Dew isn’t bad.
I feel your pain.
I have done the same as you and have tried several bourbons.
I like Buffalo Trace. Have you tried Eagle Rare??? Pretty good. Found it on sale when COVID started this spring on shopboozy.com. I bought two cases and now have only one bottle left.
I claim not to be a boozer but it sure can be habit forming if one is not on guard.
MFO
So what historian here can explain to me the Pennsylvania Whisky rebellion and why is it predominantly rye?
That’s the right one.
Some day I'll treat myself again.
OK. I’ll save the Everclear for use as an antiseptic during the post -Inauguration troubles.
