A deficiency in vitamin D on the mother’s side could explain why autism spectrum disorder is three times more common in boys, say Queensland Brain Institute researchers.
In their latest study, Professor Darryl Eyles and Dr. Asad Ali found vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy caused an increase in testosterone in the developing brain of male rats. Increase in testosterone in the brain
“The biological cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is unknown but we have shown that one of the many risk factors—low vitamin D in mothers—causes an increase in testosterone in the brain of the male fetuses, as well as the maternal blood and amniotic fluid,” Professor Eyles said.
“In addition to its role in calcium absorption, vitamin D is crucial to many developmental processes.
“Our research also showed that in vitamin D-deficient male fetuses, an enzyme which breaks down testosterone was silenced and could be contributing to the presence of high testosterone levels.” Vitamin D is critical in brain development
Professor Eyles’ previous research has shown that vitamin D plays a critical role in brain development and that giving vitamin D supplements to mice during pregnancy completely prevented autism-like traits in their offspring.
Co-author Dr. Ali said that excessive exposure of the developing brain to sex hormones like testosterone was thought to be an underlying cause of ASD, but the reasons remained unclear.
“Vitamin D is involved in pathways controlling many sex hormones,” Dr. Ali said.
“When the rat mothers were fed a low vitamin D diet, it caused male fetal brains to have high levels of exposure to testosterone.” Time to study more risk factors for ASD
Professor Eyles said the study was the first to show that a known risk factor for ASD alters testosterone in both the fetal brain and the mother’s blood — one possible contributor to why ASD is more prevalent in males.
“We have only studied one risk factor for ASD — vitamin D deficiency during development — our next step is to look at other possible risk factors, such as maternal stress and hypoxia – lack of oxygen – and see if they have the same effect,” he said.

What a great thing to finally find!
Autism is diagnosed because mothers want their boys to be zombies.
My grandson, 10, was just diagnosed with a mild case of autism.
I think he’s perfectly normal. Just bored. They live way out in a rural area with no other children to play with nearby. I was raised under those same type conditions and I know what it’s like............................
He’s bored. I was in exactly the same situation.
Yes, and in that situation you do stuff to entertain yourself...............
My testing showed that autism happens during the 3rd month of pregnancy when the thalamus in the brain is developing.
It happens when traumatic (past or current) events prevent emotional bonding between mother and child in the womb. Thus causing an imbalance in the thalamus ability to priority sort bain stimulus input favoring the masculine perspective. It favors hippocampal processing over amygdala processing.
Same here.
“I think he’s perfectly normal.”
These days, the schools and medical establishment deems typical male child behavior to be abnormal. Any hint of it and they put boys on drugs which dull their minds. This is all part of the war on boys, and by extension, our country and our civilization.
thats because government schools and most peivate ones are gynocentric and downright misandrist.
BINGO!
I always think the “Spectrum” is improperly used. Just oddballs diagnosed by educrats and psychologists.
Women don’t like milk.
Autism is not the same as hyperactive. The latter is what they try to control.
Autistics tend to be very inactive.
As for ADD, etc, some are not just “being boys”. Some are genuine brats, no matter why. Sorry, but being a pain in the ass is not “boys will be boys”. Enough with that excuse as if it’s a badge of honor.
“thats because government schools and most peivate ones are gynocentric and downright misandrist.”
No argument from me. Like the great Neal Boortz said, anybody who sends a school aged son to public school is committing child abuse, and IMHO especially if the kid is white.
Huh?
I love milk. Like my dad.
I think most of us are autistic if you use that expansive spectrum, I’m betting I am. And I’m a girl.
So would that mean that you could reverse the symtoms with high levels of Vit D?
First, Autism is the ADHD of the day. Too many “diagnosed” with it just like too many diagnosed with ADHD. Go to a doctor and they are obligated to find something wrong with you. Anyone ever hear of introspective people or a kid that needs to be directed to something to do? We had chores. Boredom is inexcusable to me and not having it is a personal responsibility. I refuse the idea of entertaining anyone or making them happy. I’ll guide children to do those things for themselves and then to take responsibility for their own well-being but I can’t entertain them or make them happy.
I just can’t imagine having taken one of our children to the doctor when they had growing up troubles or acted out to find out what was wrong with them. Anyone who thinks they are bored isn’t working or thinking hard enough to take responsibility for themselves. I equate being bored with being unhappy, nobody can fix either for you. Parents need to lead the way on this with children. ADHD kids need some “guidance” before the little snits get out of hand and have to get a significant emotional event in their lives to maybe put them back on track. The ADHD kids I had dumped on me in scouts essentially did not have parents who would take responsibility for these children. A lot of them were just not loved or were neglected. I gave up scouting for more than one reason and one of them was having to line up kids for their ADHD medications then having parents get all pissy about violating privacy rights or something. Just one insane parents event. I digress.
I grew up in in the sticks and was always busy doing something and never bored. Maybe lonely sometimes but never bored. 50 to 60 years ago we had kids that were unruly and acted out but we never had ADHD or medications for it. I hated school but knew I had to go and knew I needed to learn most of what they tried to teach me so I forced myself to do it with not so gentle encouragement from my parents. It was a relative thing, there were lots of much more interesting things to do than go to school. We had good parents, they were always busy doing something but they always had time for us when we needed them. They set a great example. I can’t remember either of them ever being unhappy or bored. If they were, we never saw it.
Someone said that the effort today is to find everything typical of males as a disorder. It figures, the radicals hate males.
The article repeats that vitamin D deficiency in the mother raises testosterone levels in the brain and somehow that causes ADHD. It does this like a word game trying to figure out as many ways to turn the message as possible. It also sounds like quite a lot of research that I have seen. Interesting but an idea in search of more money and maybe even a problem to fix.
