Weekly Garden Thread - December 12-18, 2020
December 12, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 12/12/2020 7:15:19 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

If you would like to send out a PM to the members of the Gardening list you can let them know that I will be reopening my Knowledge Base until Christmas Day.

Even though it is primarily a Knowledge Base for Preppers it has over 1300 titles on Farming, Gardening, Homesteading and Self-Sufficiency that can be very useful to people who like to work the land, be it a window box in an apartment or a large farm.

If they would like access have them send me (Oshkalaboomboom) a PM letting me know they heard about it from Diana in Wisconsin.

On Christmas Day I will stop answering PMs and the Knowledge Base will go away permanently in April of 2021.

Diana Here: It’s a great resource! I’ve bookmarked/downloaded quite a number of interesting and useful sights. Check it out!

Hello to all -

Still dry as a bone in California with temps in the 70s where I am, meaning almost daily watering. My drip system gave up the ghost and needs to be either fixed or scrapped.

Send us rain, please!

Other than that, my winter garden is always more colorful than my summer garden. I am planting cyclamen, roses and pansies.

It was here too until last night. Figures I hauled 4 buckets of water to water my garlic. Then the rain started last night and will last all day today - west Michigan.

This past week here in Central Missouri was warm and dry for the most part. A front rolled in off the plains yesterday and brought some badly needed rainfall.

My garlic is finally starting to peek through the soil. Lots of kale and collards still to harvest. Still need to finish the fall cleanup.

Seed catalogs are starting to appear in the mailbox.

I took delivery of another 25 ton of 3x6 crushed limestone for the pond. This is all going below the waterline. Every single piece will have to be hand-tossed. I’m not particularly looking forward to the task, but I do need the exercise.

I had a fall Sunday night and this morning finally got my glasses adjusted at Wal Mart. It may have been the wrong day to visit the super store since it was “Shop with a Cop” day.
About 80 or 90 little kids, five or six local cops, sheriff’s deputies, etc were helping contain the sprawl. What a madhouse !

Oh, No! Hope you recover quickly from your fall...and from Walmart!

I’ve helped with Toys for Tots in the past - I know the, ‘madhouse’ of which you speak! ;)

I’m throwing in the towel on greenhouse growing for the year. I’ve got a number of heads of lettuce to harvest today - when I get motivated to suit up and do some more shoveling later. We’ve gotten about 4” so far and more on the way through this afternoon. The heavy, WET stuff. Ugh! Beau has gone into Madison to help shovel out the wealthy ladies of Shorewood Hills. (Good tippers!)

I have lettuces started under lights, as well as some spinach that was already started in 6-packs, but I moved that in last week. Another batch of sprouts will be in the works later today.

It’s like a Snow Cave in the greenhouse - kind of fun, actually.

The birds were convinced they were STARVING, so I cleaned the snow off the feeders and re-filled them, and they’re all happy, now. Had to talk the Beagle into going outside this morning for his ‘Potty Break’ in the snow. He’s such a spoiled brat - but aren’t we all? However, after many years of Army Life, I GREATLY APPRECIATE indoor plumbing, LOL!

Pictures in a bit of our newest addition to the Menagerie - ‘Weber’ (yes, as in grill!), our beef steer.

Wow! As a photographer I must say, not only is this a great shot but the photographer who took it must be the most persistent person on the planet to try so hard and for so long.

Totally obsessed! I don’t think I’d be able to take another picture of a bird again, much less a kingfisher!

Anybody ever heard of Magnum Carrots. I use to get the pelletized seed but then they stopped carrying that variety. Best I ever grew. Minus 30 tonight, time to order seed and get away from the depressive fraudulent elections. I haven’t felt this way since JFK was killed.

I have not been in our garden for several days. I hope to talk our son into mulching our Garlic with rice hulls tomorrow. Tonight is the annual Christmas Truckers Parade here in Eureka and I’m not going but our daughter and hubby are there
