Champion Jack Dupree sings about reefers, cocaine and the needle. Fats Domino fans may recognize the melody.

This is a curious song. The prisoner is in a California prison for a crime committed in Nevada. The prison is near a railroad track over which trains travel "on down to San Antone"--but the only "San Antone" anywhere near the prison is San Antonio Valley, Calif., a small community near Altamont Pass that has never had rail service. Nonetheless, the song was a hit, and the singer went on to have a long string of hits.

Lefty Frizzell’s versionI knew it was an old song when the Band covered it, but never knew who wrote it, so thanks to your post, I looked it up on Wikipedia. It sounded like an old-time American folk song from the 1800s—what a surprise to see it was written in 1959. Thanks!

Blackjack County chain.
I was sittin’ beside the road in blackjack county
Not knowing that the sheriff paid a bounty
For men like me who didn’t have a penny to their names
So he locked my leg to thirty five pounds of blackjack county chain
And all we had to eat was bread and water
And each day we had to build that road a mile and a quarter
And black snake whip would cut our backs when some poor fool complained
But we couldn’t fight back wearin’ thirty five pounds of blackjack county chain
And then one night while the sheriff was a sleepin’
We all gathered round him slowly creepin’
And heaven help me to forget that night in the cold cold rain
When we beat him death with thirty five pounds of blackjack county chain
