Why do some people have such severe reactions?

We are 70 & 78 respectively. We have traveled, shopped, eaten in maskless establishments and do not mask for the past 9+ months in areas now experiencing high positive case detection. I have some emphysema,managed with OTC preparations. DH has high BP, managed w/diuretics and Lisinopril. We are not obese nor are we all that fit.

We had something in March 2020 that lasted off and on a few months. Very low level symptoms, the worst of which was extreme fatigue. I worked full time, moved house and traveled between homes at that time. Never spiked a temp or had any sequela.

What differentiates us from those in ICU or suffering extreme symptoms?

I wish i knew. If there was a way to predict we would k is who to isolate protect and vaccinate. Right now there is no way to know. My 80 year old parents did fine with it and we have done healthy 20 years olds in the ICU. Everyone needs o make their own risk assessment and do what they think best. I think the one group we know will not do well are nursing g homes residents
