The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

The third letter in the last name can be any one of "BJKPQVXZ", but "B" is the most reasonable and is, in fact, the correct one, if one googles the solution.
