20 years ago I was astounded to read in my kids history book that George W Bush traveled the Oregon trail, but the racist fascists in Portland tried to lynch him cause he was a conservative black man so he fled across the Columbia and founded Washington state

https://www.bookfinder.com/

to price search/locate new and used books.

But you have to know the title or author or get lucky with keywords

I think that complex reads can be read and discussed by parents and children. In that sense, it isn’t beyond them

For your son’s age, you might want to consider some of the historical novels by Kenneth Roberts. Yes, they are fiction, but they are very engaging. Check Wikipedia for titles, and
https://archive.org
if you want to examine PDFs of the books. Arundel, Rabble in Arms , and Northwest Passage are good choices.

Bernhard DeVoto’s version of the Journals of Lewis and Clark may be of interest.

I go back to about 1930. After that, everything appears to be distorted...and repeated.

55 Men and the Constitution by Rodell. This is a good place to start. It's the notes of the original convention.

Good reading for young and old.

All the Landmark books are great, if you can find them. (maybe on Ebay)

I second that. Anything before 1980.

"Ark of Empire" by Dale Van Every.

Little weighty for a 10 year old, but like those size 12 shoes my Grandfather bought on sale when I was in 5th grade.

When I was tasked to teach American lot to high schoolers, I went to the home school store where I found a 1989 elements o literature. I had all the kids get a copy on line -cost them a dollareach plus shipping. History can be taught through literature. Also get acquainted with good films. My kids know all the American musicals. Great history lessons. How people lived how the country was founded

How about the book I enjoyed as a young kid, American Revolution (How & Why Wonder Book) Paperback – June 1, 1970. You can still find used copies.

Marvelous illustrations in that book to accompany the text.

'Guadalcanal Diary' by Richard Tregaskis.

'Return With Honor' by Scott O'Grady.

When he gets a little older, try 'George Washington's War' by Robert Leckie. Yes, THAT Robert Leckie.

Go to a used book store and look for history books written before 1960. Actually same with math (math has not changed only the way it is being taught has).
