Greed.
It’s not even real money backed by anything.
The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
He’s betting his family and their well being on bitcoin.
That’s worse (IMHO) than betting it all on red or black at the roulette wheel.
I remember when 1 bitcoin wasn’t even worth a dollar
Cue the envious. More risk than I’d be willing to take, but it worked (or has so far) for him and his family. All the more power to him!
I hate to break this to you, but pull a $20 out of your wallet. What is THAT backed by? Just the faith and confidence that its worth something. There’s no difference.
And I fail to see where “greed” enters this picture? “Risk” perhaps, but not greed.
1 Bitcoin equals
19,369.90 United States Dollar

From the article, he’s given half the money away to charity. So where is the greed? Sounds more like “envy” to me ;)
Being one click or swipe from being back in total poverty yet again is hardly something to be proud about. Reminds me when daytrader-ing was all the rage.
It still isn't.
Bitcoin is an algorithm result. Nothing more.
That’s worse (IMHO) than betting it all on red or black at the roulette wheel.

I disagree. If it’s a legit roulette wheel, your chances are random.
If you’re buying commodities or currencies (even the cryto type), it is assumed you can predict how it will move. While this may well be folly, at least there is an aspect of skill to it.
To your point though, it definitely seems like greed, particularly if he didn’t sell at least some of it off when it was at 200k.
I’m glad they called it a bet rather than an investment.
Wow you know a lot about this family from an article.
And you’re probably world renowned on bitcoin :)
What are the dollars in your pocket backed by?
Do you own a home? A car?
Do you get nice things for your kids?
Gifts at Christmas?
Not what they NEED. Not what YOU need.
But above NEED.
Then you and we are all in trouble.
One could say anything above NEED is a love of mammon.
As for me, I LOVE money. I’d sleep in it if I could :)
It’s not backed by anything but it can buy a heck of a lot of fun stuff :)
I LOVE my challenger.
But i’d LOVE a corvette even more. :)
It’s called capitalism.
Many of those who are so morally superior still thrive off of the system that we greedy people keep going.
Your welcome and Merry Christmas :)
And we should all leave the judgement to God.
He’s better at it.
I have no idea how this bitcoin works. Is it like Monopoly money only people buy using real cash? Why?
Looks like they got them some of that white privilege goin’ on
Yeah. Do you believe the comments here?
Didi is a smart guy who took a reasonable risk based on his youth, good analysis of the demand for this asset, and the bet paid off incredibly. Now he’s free, and the sky’s still the limit.
He’s also savvy enough to realize that people reading this will jump in, wanting to have the life he’s got...increasing his investment value!
Smart guy all around, and his family proves the Dutch are some of the most beautiful people on Earth. And smart. Doncha just luv evolution?!
Envy is an ugly thing. There’s a reason it’s a Deadly Sin.
bkmk
All major currencies are fait currencies. They are not backed by an underlying tangible assets.
