YouTube temporarily suspends, demonetizes OANN

YouTube has barred One America News Network from posting new videos for a week and stripped it of its ability to make money off existing content after the Trump-friendly channel uploaded a video promoting a phony cure for COVID-19, YouTube spokesperson Ivy Choi tells Axios.

Why it matters: YouTube has been criticized for allowing OANN to spread misinformation using its platform, particularly around coronavirus and the election. This marks the Google-owned service's first crackdown against OANN.

Details: OANN's one-week suspension from posting new videos or livestreams is the result of a "strike" YouTube issued for violating its COVID-19 misinformation policy, which prohibits saying there is a guaranteed cure to the virus. YouTube took down the video that triggered the strike.

OANN is also suspended from the YouTube Partner Program, which means if it wants to monetize its videos again, it will have to re-apply.

YouTube has a three-strikes policy before an account is terminated. This is OANN's first strike, but it has violated the platform's COVID-19 misinformation policy before, meaning it gets no more warnings if it breaks the rules again — just additional strikes.

YouTube says it does not consider OANN an authoritative news source.

Google has the power of a nation-state. It can SILENCE anyone or any organization. If Trump is truly on the way out as Google tells us, then why doesn’t he do something about it? Why not clap them in chains and frogmarch their CEOs out of the building, and charge them with election fraud? Answer: Because Trump is not really in control of the Federal government.

I don't know about YouTube, except that it is a Google entity best not accessed at all. If one must access it for now for a particular video, that's best done with a VPN and no YouTube or other Google account.

A conspiracy theory is detrimental and a waste of time unless confirmed with real evidence and prosecuted as a real conspiracy.

I guess real life friends on Social Media enjoy hearing about their breakfast choices, but again, why would anyone care? If their lives are centered on that, then I feel sorry for them. Pick up a damn phone or email your friends about how many miles you ran today. Maybe, they have other things to talk about if they spend the time to really communicate.

Plus, Social Media sites are now censoring conservative thought and are adding to the socialist/communist agenda. I didn’t see OANN’s video but it sounds like it was poorly worded, or possibly OANN posted it on purpose to make some kind of point.

OANN knew the rules and violated them knowingly.

I’m not criticizing OANN but I don’t feel sorry for them.

Glad to know you’re not sick. My comment about turning blue was, of course, light-hearted exaggeration. Even the famous fellow who took on the astonishing shade of blue-gray wouldn’t have made it into Blue Man Group. :-)
