In Sunday's Dispatch, Cy Souders and his beloved wife Jean had an important announcement in the Celebrations Section. The couple, who graduated from Bucyrus High School, were wed in Kentucky in the fall of 1939. Last week they celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary.
So, why make a post about this? Souders was a three-time All-American End at Ohio State and was a key player on the 1942 national championship team. Another interesting fact is in 1944, Souders left the Buckeyes to serve two years of active duty with the Navy during World War II. He played three seasons in the NFL and is in the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame.
His athletic feats are astounding, but 81 successful years of marriage is by far Souders' most significant accomplishment. Cy Souders is a spritely 99 years old and will hit the century mark on January 3rd.
My parents were married Aug 18, 1939...they were married 55 years when Mom died .....Dad died the next year..
Id loved to still have them both here...
Bucyrus is about 25 miles from me.
I love happy stories like this.
The Souders are an example to us all.
They are married longer than I will live.
BTW, they were actually late bloomers, getting married at age 26, practically spinsterhood in those days!
Dad died this summer of the Covid Lockdown. No, I didn't say due to Covid. But rather, due to the Covid Lockdown.
He would have been 97 last week. A WWII Navy vet.
Dang, I miss him.
What a lovely read! Congratulations to Cy Souders. What a life!
OHIO PING!
Please let me know if you want on or off the Ohio Ping list.
