THE SECESSION MOVEMENT: The Policy of the Administration again Discussed by the Cabinet; Editorial-The Fugitive Slave Compromise and its Opponents (11/22/1860)
New York Times archives - Times Machine ^ | 11/22/1860

WASHINGTON, Wednesday, Nov. 21. The policy of the Administration, in the event of secession, was again discussed in the Cabinet yesterday, but the want of harmony in the opinions of those present precluded any result being arrived at. It is thought that the Administration will not favor a Convention of the Southern States. It is feared that questions as yet not agitated would arise for discussion, and overshadow those involved at the beginning. It is believed, however, that the Northern States will promptly repeal their obnoxious legislation, nullifying the Fugitive Slave act, and will meet the Southern delegates in Congress ready to acquiesce in proposing such amendments to the Federal Constitution as will give a satisfactory guarantee to Slave property South of some fixed geographical line. This is believed to be the only solution of the difficulties. It is understood that the Virginia Legislature will call a State Convention. Judge TRUMBULL's declaration last evening, on behalf of Mr. LINCOLN, has given great satisfaction here, and may have the effect of allaying in some degree the Southern feeling until Congress can act. It is understood that South Carolina will endeavor to precipitate the issue as soon as her Convention assembles. Q. BALTIMORE, Wednesday, Nov. 21. The Presidents and Cashiers of all the Baltimore Banks assembled at the Cashier's Room of the Union Bank, to-night, and unanimously agreed to suspend specie payments to-morrow morning. Considerable specie was withdrawn to-day, in small sums, in anticipation of suspension. This measure relieves the merchants, all of whom have thus far escaped failure.

We’d all be better off today if founding fathers had included some provision for states to secede.
.could have avoided that horrible civil war.
.could let California secede today.
do ya think southern US would have a balanced budget amendment?

Another option - Sanctuaries for everything. Second Amendment Sanctuaries to protect the 2nd Amendment the same way liberals chose to ignore federal immigration law and drug laws.

This is a topic that comes up every now and then but it stays pretty fringe.

If this election is not corrected and Trump sworn in for a second term I believe this is going to come up again. This time however I think it's going to gain widespread support really fast.

I knew we were in big trouble when I heard Rush talk about the off the air phone call he received from Leslie Stahl. She clearly had inside information that the fix was in. It was very clear to me she already knew what was going to happen in the election and was worried about the response from the people.

“If this election is not corrected and Trump sworn in for a second term I believe this is going to come up again.”

It’s more likely if Trump is sworn in. The leftists are way more activists than us on the right. They’ll burn down cities, we will meekly take it waiting for the next stolen election.

She should be worried.

The mass media has chosen sides--that makes them enemy combatants if there are any "troubles".

Tell tell about Leslie Stahl?

He said it on public program?

If so I’m surprised she hasn’t backlashed?

Secession was never in question.

It certainly wasn’t when New England griped about leaving in 1815.

I have been thinking about the unthinkable lately....

What to do if the communists cheat their way into power.

Was eyeing a modest yacht, found a few nice used ones with low hours on the diesels and high seaworthiness.

I used to live in Miami back when I was a yout...so I have some familiarity with the sea.

My grandfather used to take a small cruiser he had down to Cuba to gamble and relax on the beach...pre 1960. He was a foreman on power plant construction in South Florida..a boilermaker.

Found a nice used 98Ft boat with three staterooms so I would have room for some of my accumulated junk...and just big enough to string up a multi-band inverted vee from stem to stern for Ham radio fun. The boat holds 9000 gal of diesel and 2500 gal of fresh water so you can go most anywhere. The boat is reasonably priced and should hold its value well. Needs some cosmetic work finished and the twin Detroit 450hp diesels need rebuilding as I think 4490 hours is too much to trust at sea...so add probably 100,000 for the rebuild and other more minor work. Needs a nice Garmin instrument package as well.

The old boat has a steel hull, I like steel way better than aluminum or fiberglass.

She has accommodations for 9 passengers and 5 crew. Should be able to load a small car and secure to the deck. It needs a lifeboat so I'd have to find one...there is a spot on deck set up for a lifeboat and a small car.

Slip fees at marinas along the Florida east coast are not too bad and have water, power and pump-out at the slip so I could move to FL and live aboard and be ready to pull out at any time for better shores in case the worst happened.

I'd be selling the farm, my home in Marion IL, and liquidating a mortgage we carried ourselves on a 6 acre mini-ranch in NM close to White Sands. Would liquidate my market account and everything else...basically I would just have the boat and the funds to live on it for as long as needed.

If it comes to it it will feel really strange to set out to sea and leave the US behind :-/

Many place I could go.... Israel might be nice for a while, checked slip fees in Barbados...they are high at 3500.00/mo but hey, it's Barbados

If I were to take the boat to Israel I would go to the North Atlantic and do the Canada-Greenland-Iceland-Scotland crossing.

Come on President Trump!! save me from having to do this.

I just wanted to have a simple retirement and play with Ham Radio on the farm.

Here is a shot of this old boat...not bad looking really..the fellow that was fixing her up fell ill and can't finish her.

Maybe I re-name her the FreeRepublic...lol

Will have to find a few like-minded people to go along....it's not a good idea to go solo on such a trek.

I could also go small with something like a 32-50ft boat but I would be limited to the Caribbean/Central America/South America.. No way I would want to cross the Atlantic in a small boat... the boats are fine for The Great Loop and for hugging the coast.

I could put the saved funds into precious metals and live in a small slip in Barbados or several other places for cheap.

Saw this small 40ft boat on Boattrader.com... just 49,500.00 and big enough to live on. A Spartan existence.

It is in FL.

the OlLine Rebel: "Secession was never in question.
It certainly wasn’t when New England griped about leaving in 1815."

Northern Federalists who threatened secession because of the Democrats' Embargo on trade with Brits, those Federalist secessionists were a minority at the 1814 Hartford Convention, and their threats were not included in its final report.
However, those threats produced at least two significant results:

  1. They caused President Madison (Dem-VA) to move US Army troops off the frontier with Canada into position near New England in case of rebellion.

  2. They convinced many old Federalists (notably John Quincy Adams) to abandon their old party and join their friends among Jefferson's Democrats.
This contributed largely to the collapse of the old Federalist party and a several years long "era of good feelings" under President Monroe.
Talk of secession in 1814 was considered treasonous then, just as it was in 1860.

No, it wasn’t. Secession wasn’t in question. Whether it was wise or nice was.

And no qualms about secession within a state when it came to parting out West Virginia during the CW. But now we’re told that’s not “allowed”.

They might but I'm not at all worried about them being able to do it. Remember the commies are all show. There is no real substance behind anything they do. It's all fake, it always is and history has demonstrated this many times. They fake everything. True American patriots on the other hand are not going to be playing games. If this election is not fixed and biden steals the presidency, the Republic is gone and Americans are going to be looking at other options. Secession is at least in theory one peaceful way of going our separate ways.

I was listening to Rush when he said this. Here is an article on NewMax with quotes.

https://www.newsmax.com/politics/rush-limbaugh-60-minutes-Lesley-Stahl/2020/10/23/id/993405/

He is the money quote. Rush's exact words.

"The question that Lesley Stahl wanted to ask me was, was I going to make sure that you people in this audience didn’t do a revolution, didn’t run a revolution. If you were gonna remain calm, if I was going to urge you to remain calm after Trump lost the election?"

I should add that Leslie Stahl did not say this on the air or in public at all. She told Rush she specifically wanted to speak "off the air" when she asked him this question.

It was a few days later that Rush talked about the call on his show. That was the second I knew the fix was in and we were really in big trouble. This is clearly the reason why biden never campaigned. The commies knew they only had to do enough for plausible deniability. There was never any question they were going to steal all the battleground states. They spent hundreds of million on TV ads but if you think about it they were just paying off their media co conspirators.

Best solution I have ever seen along this line of thinking was done by a guy and his family for the same reasons. Boat was about that same size with a steel hull. This one however was a sail boat that also had large diesel engines. I think he spent about a half mil in total with purchase and updating.

The ultimate advantage to his setup was being able to sail and not even use the diesels most of the time or a lot of the time. it was an awesome setup.

Don't worry too much as I don't think you will need to buy a boat.

President Trump is going to prevail. Keep the faith. God bless President Trump and his great team of lawyers.

No we wouldn’t. And considering that most of the former confederate states receive more in federal funds than they pay in federal taxes a southern US probably wouldn’t have much of an economy for a budget.

“Remember the commies are all show.”

Tell that to the kulaks in Russia, the North Koreans, The Cubans, the Chinese under Mao, the 2 millions who died in the killing fields of Cambodia...
