November 21, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 11/21/2020 6:48:02 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Your Ginko Tree reminds me of the Tamarak Pine I had at my other farm.

When I first married into a ‘farming family’ I saw this ADORABLE ‘baby’ Tamarak near the pond at my future in-laws farm. I fell in love, as I so easily do. ;)

I got it as a Wedding Gift, along with a number of other trees from his brothers that were all, ‘in the biz.’

Anyone that asks for TREES as a wedding gift made them sure I was going to be a good asset to the family. And I was - for 20 years! ;)

I’m still trying to find out what the seeds look like once my hedge balls dry down a bit. I picked up four of these under an osage orange tree near here.
They’re drying in our beach house/seed starting building.

Next, some Ohio buckeyes...

Initially for a year or two, but likely forever.

Well, it’s good to know your limits. We’re in our 60’s now, both retired and our main goal in the upcoming years is to make our home/farm as age-friendly as we can so we can stay here as long as humanly possible.

I cannot WAIT to tear up yucky old carpeting, and put down laminate, and add walk-in/roll-in showers in both bathrooms and add better lighting here and there, etc.

Old Age Ain’t For Sissies! :)

My Thanksgiving Cactus, 'Miss Peach' is putting on her annual show. I've had her for 10 years now and she never disappoints! ❤

The week here in Central Missouri started warm and dry, and ended cool and damp. There's a heavy frost on the ground this morning.

We're working at getting things ready for winter. Had no time to spend in the garden over the weekend. Still waiting on the garlic to sprout. Bumper crop of kale and collards waiting to be harvested.

Winterized the camper, put the sides on flatbed trailer and dropped it off at the sawmill, put a bit of surface rock on the driveway, turned the compost heap, tuned up the retaining wall around Mrs. Augie's flowerbed, planted a dwarf spruce tree, and hauled off a mountain of tree pruning scraps.

I dropped most of two middling sized dead mulberry trees and cut it up for stovewood. Also dropped a dead elm and a dead oak out of the fenceline in the back yard. That stuff made a nice addition to the woodpile. I've got at least this much more dead mulberry, and a pair of kentucky coffee trees that still need to come down. The fun never ends around here.

Jealous! Beautiful woodpile! Never underestimate the value of a big woodpile!

Beau moved our woodpile somewhere when he was repairing a water line to the barn and I have no idea where it is now, LOL!

We only use it for bonfires; we have REAL heat in the house now. Yay! :)

I like to have at least six cord of mill waste on the pile by Thanksgiving. I’m quite a bit short of that this year. My trailer has been tied up with other projects so I’m behind. There were at least a dozen empty trailers at he mill when I dropped mine off yesterday. It will be at least two weeks before mine is loaded.

But, there is no shortage of deadwood here, so we’ll be alright. It’s just a bit more work for me. Old fat man needs the exercise anyway. lol

Take the outside indoors for a gardener's Thanksgiving tablescape......or sideboard assemblage.

Oh, very pretty! I’m hostessing Christmas this year, so I have BIG PLANS for the Dining Room table, and I’m going to drag out ALL decorations and do it up RIGHT!

Looking forward to it, actually! I may start this weekend. :)
