NEW DELHI: Ivermectin an approved drug of choice in certain parasitic and roundworm diseases has been found to be an effective prophylaxis for COVID 19 as per the a study report by AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. in medRxiv. The study has been published in medRXiv.

Ivermectin is one of the many drugs under-study for COVID 19. Now recent research undertaken by the doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar (AIIMS Bhubaneswar) has reported a 73% decline in the incidences of COVID-19 cases in healthcare workers who participated in the study.

With the raging case of COVID 19 in healthcare workers in AIIMS, Bhubaneswar as many as 20 to 25 cases per day in early September, the current study was conceived and implemented after reviewing the existing literature. The Involvement in the study was purely voluntary. It was a hospital-based matched case-control study with a total of 186 pairs, 77 in control, and 38 in the case group. Cases and controls were healthcare workers who tested positive and negative, respectively, for COVID-19 by RT-PCR. The study took place from September to October. profession gender age and date of the test were matched to avoid errors and selection bias in the study.

Exposure was defined as the intake of ivermectin and/or hydroxychloroquine and/or vitamin-C and/or other prophylaxis for COVID-19. Data collection and entry was done in Epicollect5, and analysis was performed using STATA version 13. Conditional logistic regression models were used to describe the associated factors for COVID-19 infection. Ivermectin prophylaxis was taken by 77 controls and 38 cases.

The authors found that Two-dose ivermectin prophylaxis was associated with 73% reduction of COVID-19 infection among healthcare workers for the following one month, those who were involved in physical activity for more than an hour/day were more likely to contract COVID-19 infection. Type of household, COVID duty, single-dose ivermectin prophylaxis, vitamin-C prophylaxis and hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis were not associated with COVID-19 infection.

The authors concluded that Two-dose ivermectin prophylaxis at a dose of 300 μg/kg with a gap of 72 hours was associated 73% reduction of COVID-19 infection among healthcare workers for the following one-month The study is currently under pre-print is yet to be peer-reviewed.

This finding can be helpful in many cases where drugs like Hydroxychloroquine is contraindicated like certain cardiac conditions. For further details click on the following link :

RE: Is that the horse medicine, dog medicine, or both?

BOTH, and depending on the dosage, it is also human medicine against parasites. In fact it WAS originally developed for humans until they discovered its efficacy for animals as well.

Horse deworming paste will be flying off the shelves... unless our overlords buy it all up first.

Sounds like it’s dosed once/week, preventatively, as is HCQ.

Tonight my mom told me that one of my neices has Covid-19. She said that she had to be tested because people in her dormitory had it. My mom was very concerned. I asked if my neice or any of her friends were actually sick. She said no.

This farce keeps going on and on. Young people do not need treatment because they typically do not even realize they are “sick”. If you are not sick do you really have Covid-19 or are you just one of the 90% who are arguably a false positive?

Thanks....so they take two does, over 72 hours....then, when are the next doses?

I’ll have to re-read, or look for another write up with the info.

I re-read it looking for exactly that answer, but I don’t see it. It’s such an obvious question. I’m always surprised when “professionals” don’t provide answers to obvious questions.

They report the prophylaxis effect in terms of overall reduction over a one month period. But there is a half-life in the body and effectiveness has to decline. Do you need to dose weekly? Bi-weekly? Monthly?

Keep in mind, anyone can have a pre-existing condition that makes them more vulnerable to COVID. This includes very common conditions, so common we often don’t take them seriously at first. Asthma, Diabetes and Congenital Heart Disease are a few. Having been born premature may be another.

@DrSamGirgis commented at the site: “Ivermectin. Once weekly dosing. Well tolerated. Replicated in several studies.”

Dr. Paul Marik’s COVID protocol at EVMS:

• Ivermectin for pre- and postexposure prophylaxis (see ClinTrials.gov NCT04422561 & NCT04425850). 200 ug/kg immediately then repeat in 72 hours.

• Ivermectin for prophylaxis in high risk individuals. 150-200 ug/kg (or 12 mg) ivermectin weekly.

The Indian study recommends 300 ug/kg, 50% higher than Marik. At least Marik says continue dosing weekly for high-risk individuals (HCWs, elderly, comorbidities, etc)

Okay....from the articles I can find, on this, it looks like this was only a one month study. It involved 300+ HCWs.

So, I guess this is a once a month, 2 dose (w/each dose being 72 hrs apart) regimen.

I thought this was interesting....

... “Earlier, at least 20 to 25 HCWs were getting infected with the virus daily. After the workers started taking ivermectin, the number of infection has come down to one or two per day.”
