Good informational article giving histories of the 9mm FMJ round and the 5 most popular 9mm handguns.
9mm FMJ is also one of the least expensive rounds available too, (at least it was once cheap).

Where are people getting 9mm ammo? And how much are they paying per round?
yeah??? well, my M59 is still doing it's part...
lotta p85/89/90/etc using them
I like my sig p320 18. It’s small enough to carry, big enough for good range shooting. Nice comfortable grip. Has a rail for mounting lights.
I don’t have any of those.
That Smith and Wessson was the pistol I carried until my departure from the job. The pistol was accurate right out of the box but loading the magazines was hell on my thumbs.
It didn’t help that I had arthritis in my hands already but the pain in the thumbs was unbearable. Smith and Wesson need to work on that.
With modern police rounds the 9mm is highly underrated.
Modern rounds will drive a .75in hole all the way through you even if you hit a rib. And will pop a head like a fallen watermelon.
9mm luger is in no danger of going away. It is a very effective handgun round and is the most common in the world - and has killed more than any other handgun round by far.
In 9mm luger I have: a luger p08, a walther P-38, a Radom viz, an Astra 600, a CZ 75 bd, a CZ 2075 rami, a star 30 M, a Nazi conversion Steyr Hahn, a Nazi contract Star B, and I still need several more that I haven’t gotten around to buying yet.
Glock 17 was the first variant, 19 came later. Forgot the Beretta 92 series. “Top Five” is subjective, based on author’s opinion. Lots of good and interesting stuff out there. Poly 80’s 80% lower is very interesting , owing to the fact that you can make it yourself.
Sig 320 is very popular since the Army’s acceptance.
WHAT! No Browning Hi-Power?
I still love my Beretta 92 FS, I don’t care what banyone says.
Love my Glock 19 and G17...The AK47 of the handgun world... they ALWAYS go bang.
Love my VP9. Reliable and accurate.
While all of those pistols are nice, the 9mm is the most popular pistol round because it is cheap (before the hysteria hit us) and bullet technology has greatly increased its lethal effects.
The author is a simpleton. His assumption proves it. Furthermore, his history of the Sig is not accurate.
I'd say the military's move to the Sig P320 in 9mm is a major component of keeping the 9mm alive too. I have the M17 and love it.
I own 2 M&P Shields.
I used to read Mad Magazine, back in the day (’64 ish).
In one issue, they did a spoof of mail order ads in the back of magazines:
So you see a cluttered page, with a small add for a genuine German Luger, with firing pin removed for safety.
Then another small add on the same page, offering genuine firing pins for German Lugers.
