East Haddam Woman Fights Off Coyote With Pitchfork, Donkey
Patch ^ | 5 Nov 2020 | Chris Rhatigan

Posted on 11/09/2020 5:29:48 PM PST by DUMBGRUNT

An East Haddam woman was reportedly attacked by a coyote twice in a single day. The coyote bit her boot before it was kicked by the donkey in the first instance. The same day, the coyote attacked again when the woman was driving her car near her home.

The neighbors encountered the coyote on their property and shot and killed it.

....but I didn’t think it was in its right coyote mind. So I regarded it as a poor creature.

No. Words.

Remembering this article:

Our Australian Shepherds sometimes hog the bed, I doubt there would be room for a donkey.

Did the women see a Roadrunner before the coyote and did the coyote have anything that had ACME on packages? 😀

I’ve been seeing local news reports the past few years about coyote sightings in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Not too far from me.

I read that originally coyotes (Canis latrans) were just a Western animal, while timber/gray wolves (Canis lupus) were spread throughout all of North America.

As European inmigrants spread over the US, the range of the latter shrank down to practically nothing, short of Alaska & a few enclaves next to the Canadian and Mexican borders, such as Isle Royale in Lake Superior.

With the apex canine predator gone, the coyotes spread out to populate the wolves' former range. What was at one time a species that was almost unheard of east of the Mississippi, is now inhabiting every single state except Hawaii.

Thank you. Makes sense...

They’re actually beautiful critters. Like grey German Shepherds.

In my state (Michigan) coyote season is year round and you only need a small game license. If you are on your own land you do not need a license.

East Haddam is a small town on the east side of the Connecticut River. Nathan Hale taught school there and Gillette Castle is there. Gillette Castle was the home of William Gillette, a Broadway actor who played Sherlock Holmes. The High School in town is Nathan Hale - Ray High School, the home of one of America’s unique nicknames - The Noises. Yes the Noises.

Took out one of my neighbor's kids (baby goat not human child). He went hunting and got four coyotes.

I gotta say, I only heard the howl, and it didn’t sound domesticated. And it’s the only one I’ve heard live in my 60+ years. OwOohWoooo! Never heard of any being turned loose here, and if they were, the farmers would probably shoot them on sight. Ya shoulda seen the bug-eyed look on my outdoorsy buddy’s face when he heard it, har!

Donkeys are good watch animals. Coyote or feral dog steps into a pasture and the jake will attack.

We have coyotes howling here in the deep woods of northern CT.

The only problem is that our dog likes to join them in song—sometimes in the middle of the night!

I’ve seen them strolling in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and near Land’s End there as well. They are everywhere now.

“Coyote” and “Connecticut” somehow seem to NOT go together in the same sentence... Colorado and Coyote, or Arizona and Coyote, however, yeah...

You are thinking of little miserable western coyotes. These are Eastern coyotes, also known as coywolves. About a hundred years ago the coyote bred with red wolf and a few dogs to create a much larger and stronger animal which has worked its way down the eastern seaboard in recent years. These things are at least fifty pounds and are not scared of hell. They are about 15-20% wolf and 5% domestic dog. They are a real and serious problem for farmers. They’ll go after a 1200-pound horse with rider on a sunny afternoon on the open. Ask me how I found that out.
