Actress and activist Rose McGowan had a little bit of an accident while waiting for the results of the US presidential elections.
The actress, 47, shared a photo of herself from inside a hospital with a cast on her hand. "Reading US election results while on the stairs = bone break," she captioned the image.
McGowan went on to use the opportunity to speak about healthcare in United States, writing, "It cost $250 in Mexico for my emergency room visit, compared to a likely 10k hospital bill in California for the same accident."
"USA is not the land of the free, its the land of the overcharged #bigpharma #usa🇺🇸 #mexico 🇲🇽 OUCH," she added. McGowan has openly criticized both Democratic nominee Joe Biden and Republican incumbent President Donald Trump in the past.
McGowen was one of the leading voices who spoke out about sexual assault and harassment, specifically in regards to the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases and the Me Too movement. McGowan has released a memoir, Brave, and starred in the four-part documentary series Citizen Rose, both in 2018.
>>”It cost $250 in Mexico for my emergency room visit, compared to a likely 10k hospital bill in California for the same accident.”
But that’s because her bill in America includes those who use the emergency room for non-emergencies and then don’t pay their bill.
In Mexico they don’t need malpractice insurance.
So, stay in Mexico.
americans pay for about 20 million illegal mexicans here thru higher medical bills, rosie
No treatment received for the mental illness that resulted in her being so out of it while reading election results on a stairwell that she actually fell and broke her arm.
In a related story, I got a nasty paper cut while shredding a magazine article praising Biden.
Regards,
Shes right about the cost of health care in the USA. Average doctor salary in 2020 is $225k or about $108 an hour. Add another $40k (rough estimate) for medical malpractice liability insurance, or $19 an hour.
Average RN pay in California (most expensive) is $113k or about $54 an hour.
An x-ray tech makes maybe $20 an hour. An x-ray machine is maybe $30k. How long does it take to x-ray an arm? Maybe 10 mins at most, but lets say the tech only does one per hour, or $14 machine cost per hour assuming the machine is replaced every year (LOL).
Cost of power to run the lights and machines is negligible. I dont know how much splinting materials, alcohol wipes and other consumables cost, but lets be generous and assume $100. Adding it all up, using an hours worth of time spent by everyone to diagnose, x-ray, and set a simple arm fracture that involves no surgery comes to $315.
Looking online, I see patients reporting much, much higher prices for some hospitals, and prices range from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars for simple fractures not involving surgery. You go in and have absolutely no idea how much they will attempt to gouge you.
Agreed, we all know that issue well. However, I think the way hospitals try to recover those costs by simply raising their fees for everyone else is stupid. The higher medical fees go, the more people who will fall into the bucket of those who cant afford to pay. Then another price hike, followed by even fewer paying, ad infinitum, until eventually either one really rich guy ends up paying everyone elses bills, or the whole system collapses.
Instead, they should be LOWERING medical fees until they find the equilibrium point at which they bring in the most revenue. Theres also far more going on with respect to astronomical medical costs than just the illegal aliens not paying and the costs of new technology, which we always hear about.
Ever notice how every new hospital now looks like a five-star resort inside, with huge lobbies, grand pianos, waterfalls, etc? You have to ask yourself why an industry that constantly claims it is hurting, and therefore must continually raise its fees, would spend ridiculous amounts of money on architectural amenities that have zero effect on patient care.
Well, Im certainly no expert, but what I have read is that these hospital associations are able to charge higher fees if their overhead is higher, thus they tend to waste money on some crazy things in order to drive up their own costs. I dont remember the details now, but I believe it had to do with the peculiarities of some reimbursement formula that ties their reimbursement to a percentage over cost. There are many who I have seen who argue that this has created perverse incentives for hospitals to actually try to drive their costs higher. It sounded to me to be similar to infamous cost plus contracts in the defense industry, that always end up driving overall costs into the stratosphere, while the contractor makes out like a bandit.
Anyone who knows more about this can chime in if they have the details. Its the only explanation that makes sense to me anyway for why a supposedly cash-strapped industry would be building palaces left and right, or paying their CEOs tens of millions of dollars, while at the same time they whine that they must charge you $100 for a Tylenol.
Yours is a fascinating post.
I went to see my dying father in the hospital and after years living here, I was shocked at how gorgeous the place was.
Here, in the socialist paradise known as Quebec, the hospitals look like they are from the 1950s. Apparently they can’t even pony up for some fresh paint.
There is a part of me that wants to volunteer to fix things up, but the sane side tells me to focus on my own house.
Oh BTW, Rose, was considering buying the DVD set of “Charmed” but I would prefer that you have to keep rummaging around your pockets for the money for health care.
LOL!
Seriously...just how did that happen?
Something’s fishy...
LOL! If Biden pulls this off, I predict a rash of paper cuts. ;)
Listening to Chicago news and ... we must have a new election.
Yeah, but when you get cancer, where will you go?
Vapid bitch.
I expect alcohol was involved, like when Tom the Son got a big cut on his foot, fell in the ocean, and broke his phone while we were on vacation in September.
The enemy of Alyssa Milano is our friend.
Been in VA hospital. Gawd awful and run by diversity hires and nurses almost 100% Obama sisters. Nurse Rachet. Why should they care? Most there have no other place to go. Only staff that was nice and caring was the Russian immigrant working housekeeping..
Been to private hospitals. Clean, airy, comfortable, private room with own bathroom, flat-screen TVs, friendly and excellent staff and doctors, great food (had a menu). In other words, everything the VA wasnt.
Environment does affect your recovery. Barebone VA hospitals are depressing places, private hospitals are like a hotel and THAT had a positive affect on my recovery.
“But thats because her bill in America includes those who use the emergency room for non-emergencies and then dont pay their bill.”
And are often from Mexico.
When I was in FL I knew a guy from Haiti. On one of his trips home, he had an accident that put a gash on his head. He went to what goes for the emergency room there where they used duct tape to close the wound. They charged him $10. He was quite proud of that.
Another factor of those prices is that is the sticker price.
Insurance companies have prenegotiated rates that are far below those price points. If hospitals lower the costs insurance companies are going to want even lower pricing.
When you pay cash they’ll first try to pass you that full fare rate. If you ask if there is anything they can do to make it more affordable they will slash thousands off the price.
