It seems the good Mr. Douglass and many of his colleagues are beginning to realize abolition will only be the first step on a very long road.

Strong predicts: "...that Southern conservatives will be crushed and silenced though in the majority, and the Reign of Terror in the Carolinas, Georgia and other states will so strengthen that it may become so intolerable and so thrown off..."

Just so we're clear on this: by "conservatives" Strong means Unionists, former Whigs, today's Republicans.
Strong thinks they are the majority, though "crushed and silenced" by Democrats.

The "Reign of Terror" refers to Democrats, slaveholders, secessionists who've made life "intolerable" for conservative Unionists.

So, in 1860, minority Democrats' Reign of Terror crushes & silences the majority of conservative Unionists, today's Republicans.

When will we see that happen again?

Diary of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: November 7, 1860

Lincoln is elected. Overwhelming majorities in New York and Pennsylvania. This is a great victory; one can hardly overrate its importance. It is the redemption of the country. Freedom is triumphant.
