Mozilla Thunderbird 78 e-mail Client Tabs on Top
Mozilla Add-Ons, Rise of the Tools ^ | November 2, 2020

Posted on 11/02/2020 3:46:30 PM PST by CedarDave

About this Add-on:

Moves the toolbar for mails back up above the tabbar. Note that this might cause the design to suffer when using a theme not supporting this extension. So the default theme has issues with aero on windows (and looks as terrible as it looked before the changes in 1.11).

There are a number of us die-hard users of the Mozilla Firefox and the Thunderbird email client. Thunderbird version 78 was download to my desktop computer this afternoon and promptly screwed up my screen and put my mail tabs on top (Firefox did the same thing last year and there is a fix for that involving inserting code). In the Thunderbird case, a simple add-on fixed the problem. The earlier version (2.0.0.0) does not solve the problem but the current version updated last week does (2.0.0.1).

Browser designers like to think that newer is better, but changing design and function every few months is a horror for many of us - leave it as it is!!

Just use G-mail like everyone else does these days. To hell with 3rd party email clients of any kind.

Another thing about Thunderbird 78. It (by default) enforces use of TLSv1.2 and disallows (by default) any mail service that does not provide TLSv1.2. What does this mean?

In my case, it meant that when Thunderbird updated itself to 78, all my email send/receive functions stopped working and “hung”. And no error message — just sat there “connected” but unable to proceed.

I finally figured out that there is a way in the Config Editor to change settings to allow mail services that have the older TLS versions (v1.0 and v1.1). Those older ones are less secure, so they’re now deprecated.

Playing with the Config Editor is like playing with Windows Registry via RegEdit. Not for the faint of heart!

I plan to post a thread about this in a day or so.

"Just use G-mail like everyone else does these days."

I presume you know that Google reads every one of your emails, and makes advertising, marketing, and who knows what else decisions about you, based on what they say.

Just sayin'.

I just “upgraded” from version 68 to the latest version 78. My folders now have a black outline with a white interior instead of the yellow folder I did have before.

I also have several duplicate email address’s.
Tabs are on top right under File | Edit | View etc

Lots of complaints on Mozilla about email problems. I’m still getting them (requests for last minute poilitical donations) but haven’t sent any yet.

Apparently V. 78 is a complete redesign of the email system - screen and functions “updated.” Just crap. At least I’m not the only one with issues.

78.4.0 here.
I use the default “theme”. I never even noticed that the tabs are above the toolbar. /grin

I’ll stick with Thunderbird. I have a BUNCH of email accounts on a private domain and don’t really want to let Google get more hooks in than they already have.

I do not work for the State Department and the server is not in my bathroom.

If that’s what you’re worried about then don’t use email of any kind. If you think you’re safe from that with with firefox email, I’ve got a nice bridge to sell you.

#2 The random yccklof6.default name is different for your install.

Open Thunderbird> Tools> Account Settings> Local Folders>
Local directory>
C:\Users\ Your name \AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\yccklof6.default\Mail

Your old email is there. You can copy and paste the folders into your new folder from the new install.

Inbox.sbd
Sent.sbd
Drafts.sbd
Templates.sbd

I’m a die hard FF and TB user. I’m on v78 and it looks different but nothing broke other than some weird folders popped up on my gmail account. I fixed it using the web version of gmail but it was a PITA. I have some customization to FF and TB so that might be helping me out.

I’m considering ditching both products and using Outlook (gasp) and chrome (double-gasp) because the Mozilla products are making me feel like I’m an alpha tester.

You can change the folder colors!!
Right click on any folder> Properties> Icon Color
I now have colorful folders!

Now looking to see how to reduce the spacing of the email lines under the Subject heading. They look double spaced to me.

No, that is not wise, since all your email is then in the "cloud," and inaccessible in case of Internet outages or possible future Google censoring of email due to being politically incorrect. Thunderbird works and can download all you mail to your HD. Thank God for it.

Thanks - I just turned off auto-updates and will let them fix it before I allow any other changes.

none of it is there, it deleted everything which is just plain stupid, normally programs reinstall and use the existing saved databases, but these snot nosed kids without adult supervision appear to be not so smart. Maybe they should have called their Mommy for advice first??
