THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN: PLANS OF THE SOUTHERN DISUNIONISTS; Editorials-Punishment for the Slave-trade to be Abolished, Famine in Kansas (11/1/1860)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 11/1/1860

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 1860. The publicity which has been given to the Disunion plot, which prominent Treasury officials, who enjoy the intimacy and confidence of the Secretary, have had the imprudence to reveal, gives great annoyance to that dignitary and his satellites. They are beginning to doubt the utility of the brag game, and to suspect that they may have overdone the matter. They find that the attempt to frighten the people into the support of the nominees of the disunion faction by threats of secession, is having an effect the very opposite of what was intended; and the lame attempt is now being made to reinstate the Secretary of the Treasury in the public confidence, by calling to mind his opposition to disunion ten years ago. This wretched defence, so far from exculpating him from the charge of aiding and abetting in the treasonable conspiracy to dissolve the Union in the event of Mr. LINCOLN's election, admits it. No one pretends to deny that Mr. COBB was opposed to disunion ten years ago; and it seems that no one will defend him from the charge of favoring disunion at the present time. The country, therefore, must rest under the shame and disgrace of having a man at the head of the financial department of the Government, who will conspire to break up the Confederacy, unless his party shall succeed in the defeat of Mr. LINCOLN. It is now clear that the President lacks the moral courage to dismiss a Southern Disunionist from his Cabinet.

For readers who just skim the news I should point out that the Army Intelligence item on the last page includes a story about Maj. George Thomas. In August he was wounded by a Comanche arrow in Texas. That will be the only wound he sustains in his career, despite taking part in some heavy fighting in the coming years. He will gain something of a title at Chickamauga.

from the editorial: "They [Democrats] find that the attempt to frighten the people into the support of the nominees of the disunion faction by threats of secession, is having an effect the very opposite of what was intended..."

And yet again history repeats itself (or at least rhymes) in 2020.
Today we're told the only way to end the rioting & destruction of cities is to elect to political power the people who are doing it!

Democrats!

Republicans were not frightened away in 1860, dare we hope that in 2020 we'll still stand strong?

"...a story about Maj. George Thomas."

George Thomas: standing as a testament to all of history that many Virginia military officers took their oath of allegiance to the United States seriously.

Others included Gen. Scott & Admiral Farragut.
Both Thomas & Farragut were studiously non-political, but Scott had previously run for President, as a Whig, forerunners of Republicans.
