When the definitive history of Donald Trumps presidency is written, itll likely begin on April 30, 2011, long before he was actually elected.
Thats when Seth Meyers, then the anchor of Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live, told a joke that, some believe, so infuriated Trump he resolved to run for president.
Speaking at the White House Correspondents' Dinner that night, Meyers acknowledged Trump in the audience, and then said: Donald Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican, which is surprising, since I just assumed he was running as a joke.
It got a big laugh, but not from Trump, who who sat rigid and stone-faced in the audience, staring daggers at Meyers.
(snip)
Meyers didnt write that joke. Comedian Jon Rineman did and he regrets it. Talking publicly for the first time about the one-liner regarded by some as a pivotal moment in American political history, Rineman thinks he and the country would be better off today if he never scribbled that joke in his notebook. Hes not kidding. Rineman is tormented by the idea that he could be one of the reasons Trump became president.
Was the run for president in 2016 Trumps revenge? Some think so.
On that night, Trumps own sense of public humiliation became so overwhelming that he decided, perhaps at first unconsciously, that he would, somehow, get his own back perhaps even pursue the presidency after all, no matter how nihilistically or absurdly, and redeem himself, The New Yorkers Adam Gopnik, who was seated a few tables from Trump at the dinner, wrote in 2015.

It’s amusing, the lengths liberals will go to, trying to assuage their TDS.
This may have added to Trumps resolve but these aholes think waaaay too much of themselves if they think it was this one little pathetic joke.
Trump saw America going down the shi&&er and, by the grace of God, won in 2016 to fix it. It’s that simple. Nobody else could have beaten Hillary. It HAD to be a non politician.
That’s just it...the Globe writer is possibly blaming it on the joke. But it’s true that the media went all after Trump in the 16 win and nobody seemed to take him seriously even on election night...then they were shocked, shocked. The Young Turks video showing Hillary’s supposed win unraveling is a must to watch. Cenk Uygur
aka Chunk Yogurt then starts to lambaste the Dem party
for screwing things up.
It’ll happen again.
And for those who think of Trump as being dumb, here’s another SNL line, from Chevy Chase:
“If he’s so dumb, how come he’s President?”
That was referring to Jerry Ford...who never actually ran for President or even veep before getting the office because he was elevated to VP when Agnew resigned, then Nixon followed suit. (And went on to lose to the peanut farmer.) But here it can be applied to Trump who easily beat The Smartest Woman In The World.
If he’s so dumb...how come he WON?
Trump’s presidential ambitions were evident for decades. I believe it was Pat Nixon, Richard Nixon’s wife, who remarked Donald Trump is the sort of man who could be elected president if he chose to run.
Ridiculous. How these entertainer dorks think what they say and do is so world changing and important.
Absolutely Correct.
Seth Meyers. LOL.
If they are the reason he ran for POTUS, then they have control. The one thing that bothers the left and right most is they cannot control Trump.
It may not have been THE reason, but I’ll bet it was one of the things that pushed him over the line to decide. If it were me, and I was publicly humiliated on national TV, I’d want to do something to get back at whoever did it.
I hope Mr. Rineman stews on this for a very, very long time.
That guy thinks too much of himself.

Just read a comment from the original article that stated “Biden will clean Trump’s clock on election day”...
Wishful thinking...I don’t believe Biden is qualified or has the skills to clean any of Trump’s clocks. Not even certain at this point that Biden can tell time.
I love Donald. He is forever my hero!!!
It's truly a no-good "sense of humor" when a loser, Can't-Do post-turtle-of-dubious-immigration-status uses his position to denigrate a robust Can-Do American man who is full of real, tangible accomplishments.
We have Obama's encouragement to thank for Donald Trump's decisive burst of enthusiasm, but as per the subject of the article, looks like even more winning to me:
Rineman is tormented by the idea that he could be one of the reasons Trump became president.
Their “joke” was that he was all talk and no action.
8 years of suck from McCain and Romney and almost 4 years from JEB! made a difference.
This “comedian”? Not a bit.
Where IS the joke?
Since the 80s I’ve heard “He’s a Republican!” as the punchlines to leftists’ attempts at humor (and not in reference to Donald Trump).
Was the run for president in 2016 Trumps revenge? Some think so.
That'll make 'em all feel better, ... ordinary people too.
The BostonGlob ran staged photos of a British man urinating on what appeared to be a Middle Eastern man as “evidence of war crimes and torture in Iraq”.
Except the whole thing was staged in England.
They are hacks. And they like pee pee photos and video.

Hitlery Rotten Clinton was why he ran. “Hell no” was the reasoning.
