Was his joke the reason Trump ran for president? Some say so, and it torments him
Boston Globe ^ | 10-30-2020 | Mark Shanahan

When the definitive history of Donald Trump’s presidency is written, it’ll likely begin on April 30, 2011, long before he was actually elected.

That’s when Seth Meyers, then the anchor of “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live,” told a joke that, some believe, so infuriated Trump he resolved to run for president.

Speaking at the White House Correspondents' Dinner that night, Meyers acknowledged Trump in the audience, and then said: “Donald Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican, which is surprising, since I just assumed he was running as a joke.”

It got a big laugh, but not from Trump, who who sat rigid and stone-faced in the audience, staring daggers at Meyers.
(snip)
Meyers didn’t write that joke. Comedian Jon Rineman did — and he regrets it. Talking publicly for the first time about the one-liner regarded by some as a pivotal moment in American political history, Rineman thinks he and the country would be better off today if he never scribbled that joke in his notebook. He’s not kidding. Rineman is tormented by the idea that he could be one of the reasons Trump became president.

Was the run for president in 2016 Trump’s revenge? Some think so.

“On that night, Trump’s own sense of public humiliation became so overwhelming that he decided, perhaps at first unconsciously, that he would, somehow, get his own back — perhaps even pursue the presidency after all, no matter how nihilistically or absurdly, and redeem himself,” The New Yorker’s Adam Gopnik, who was seated a few tables from Trump at the dinner, wrote in 2015.

Trump should give a Presidential Medal of Freedom to Seth Myers for telling that joke

If true, the American People—in fact, the People of the World—owe Meyers a deep debt of gratitude.

That in no small measure would be why the joke even happened.

“ Trump is visibly seething.”

Trump doesn’t seethe. He doesn’t go along with the crowd. He doesn’t laugh along like a sheep

I dont often pay attention to the political “dinners.”

But I was so sad that the Al Smith dinner had to be cancelled this year. Watching Trump destroy those folks would have been sweet.

If he gets reelected, it would be nice to see him do one final White House Press dinner. He would destroy them, drop the mic, and walk off into the sunset.

A comment on the article from user “#trunalimunumaprzure”:

“Some of the greatest videos on youtube are the compilations showing all of the liberal talking heads and Democrat politicians stating in a matter of fact way there is simply no way for Trump to win the 2016 election. The clip of Trump glaring at Seth Myers is in almost all of these compilations. I could watch those videos 10,000 times and it never gets old.

By this time next week there will be all new compilations of the same liberal talking heads and Democrat politicians stating in a matter of fact way there is simply no way for Trump to win the 2020 election. I won’t even be surprised if the Seth Myers clip is used in some of the 2020 compilations too!

And I’ll watch the 2020 versions of the compilations over and over again too!

I just hope The Young Turks have a meltdown in 2020 that is as awesome as The Young Turks Meltdown on Election Night 2016! To me, that is the most awesomely hilarious video on all of youtube!

If you’ve never seen the video “The Young Turks Election Meltdown 2016: From Smug to Utterly Devasted”, do yourselves a favor and watch it

I was watching Trump’s face, a video clip, as he sat in the audience while Obama made a smart-ass comment about him. The audience gushed with laughter. My thought was then, after seeing his expression of resolve, that Trump is not the type of person you want to cross. I doubt that that was the motivating moment, certainly not that joke, but it is icing on the cake.

Not directed at the OP, but this is a stupid article. Donald J Trump ran for POTUS because like the rest of us, he could see the country being destroyed by the Obama/Clinton/Biden cabal and the lunatics that support them. He had already accomplished more in his lifetime than ANY other politician in the Presidency, the Senate, or the House. Like us he was sick of them and perhaps a bit fearful that the American Dream was eroding toward socialism. In fact, he has saved us from that fate at enormous expense to himself and his family, and I don’t mean financially. To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, we need this man, he fights. Let’s hope we keep him.

Cray cray beyond the help of a shrink.

Young Trump and his father were sitting with the architect who designed the Verazanno Narrows Bridge. It was the Grand Opening ceremony and the Mayor of New York City, The governors of New York and New Jersey were present for the ceremony.

Not once did they mention the architect’s name during the ceremony. He was furious.

This so impacted 21 year old Trump that he decided to put his name on everything he built.

People, he thought, were as hungry for a sight of joy as he had always been—for a moment’s relief from that gray load of suffering which seemed so inexplicable and unnecessary. He had never been able to understand why men should be unhappy.

The dark road had risen imperceptibly to the top of the hill. He stopped and turned. The red glow was a narrow strip, far to the west. Above it, small at a distance of miles, the words of a neon sign stood written on the blackness of the sky: REARDEN STEEL.

He stood straight, as if before a bench of judgment. He thought that in the darkness of this night other signs were lighted over the country: Rearden Ore—Rearden Coal—Rearden Limestone. He thought of the days behind him. He wished it were possible to light a neon sign above them, saying: Rearden Life.

He turned sharply and walked on.

From the NYT

CITY LORE; New York’s Other Master Bridge Builder
By Bernard Stamler
April 16, 2000

His works soar above the water, spanning the city’s rivers and connecting New York to the rest of the country. But who has heard of Othmar H. Ammann?

Donald Trump hadn’t, at least not back in 1964 when he was a high school student and his father took him to the dedication ceremony for the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. ‘’It was a sad experience,’’ Mr. Trump recalled. ‘’For years, various politicians had fought the bridge. Now that it was built, I watched as these same people all got up and took credit for it, congratulating themselves and introducing one another. The only one not introduced was the man who made the bridge, Othmar Ammann.

‘’I had to ask who he was,’’ Mr. Trump said. ‘’I didn’t know who he was, either.’’

What a hugely overinflated view of their own importance.
