WASHINGTON, Sunday, Oct. 28, 1860. In my letter which appeared in the TIMES on Friday, I barely announced the discovery of a diabolical plot to dissolve the Union, and gave a very brief Statement of its outlines. I now have it in my power to give highly interesting details of the reasonable scheme. These details afford unmistakable proof that the conspirators have no confidence in the sympathy of the masses, even of the Gulf States. Their plan is to betray the South into rebellion, by a repetition of the Lecompton fraud. They dread the consequences of a direct appeal to the people on the question of Disunion. To elude this danger, the general convention of the seceding States is to be elected by their several Legislatures, and upon this body full and conclusive powers of dissolving the Union, and of electing BRECKINRIDGE to the Presidency, are to be conferred! The people are not to be consulted, either in the initiatory process of electing the Convention, or in the ratification of its resolves. The treasonable oligarchs, with characteristic contempt for the rights and interests of the people, are determined to take the responsibility of proclaiming a Southern Confederacy, and the masses will be dragooned into acquiescence by fire and sword. All who resist, or decline to aid the traitors, are to suffer death and a confiscation of property. It is expected by these miserable plotters of treason that they will have the active cooperation of England and France, and particularly the latter. The Southern Confederacy, in order to enlist the sympathies of these foreign Powers, will open their ports to the free admission of their merchandize.

Good Lord man. This headline reads like it is 10/30/2020.
I glanced at the headline and starred reading a bit before going back and checking if this was the 1860 article. I sometimes have to do that with Babylon Bee and John Semmes.
My thought exactly -- in 1860 Democrats were eager to declare secession & sell out to Britain & France.
Today they simply want to sell to the highest bidders, which seem to be the Chinese.
One big difference seems to be that at this point in 1860 people understood Republicans were going to win, "bigly".
Today that is not at all clear...
Hi Professor.
When was that slave rebellion, Nate Turner was the leader? Did we cover that?

Nat Turner’s rebellion occurred back in August 1831, it says on Wiki. Some of us weren’t even born yet. I was still in high school. freerepublic.com hadn’t been invented yet so I couldn’t cover it at Free Republic University.
” I was still in high school. freerepublic.com hadnt been invented yet so I couldnt cover it at Free Republic University.”
Laz says that in 1831 FReeRepublic was posting in the papers at the time. Something like classifieds or a bulletin board...or some such thing.
You should have signed up then. It was glorious.

Interesting argument. The conspirators, the Deep State, are on the aide of Southern secession.
