The Republican Party is hoping to build its ranks of Black lawmakers in the House, with one candidate expected to win in a safe GOP district and a handful of others in competitive races, following the planned retirement of its sole current Black member.
Republicans made increasing diversity among their ranks a priority this election cycle. Sixty-four Black GOP candidates ran for the House this fall, with about half making it to the general election, according to a senior Republican aide.
The Republicans’ best bet in the House is Byron Donalds, a Naples, Fla.-based state lawmaker who has aligned himself closely with President Trump, casting himself to voters as “a strong, Trump-supporting, gun-owning, liberty-loving, pro-life, politically incorrect Black man.” After winning a hotly contested primary, he is on track to win his race next week in the heavily Republican district. He faces Democrat Cindy Banyai, a consultant and college instructor.

Two other Black Republicans are running in competitive races, facing freshmen Democrats in predominantly white districts. Burgess Owens in Utah’s fourth district is challenging Rep. Ben McAdams and Wesley Hunt is running against Rep. Lizzie Fletcher in Texas’ seventh district in Houston. Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) fundraised and campaigned for both, and introduced the top candidates to the president.
“Black Americans are not monolithic, we do not think with our skin,” Mr. Owens said, calling Democrats too focused on race. Mr. Owens said he represents a point of view that “puts God, country, family, above everything else. And because of that, I’m a big threat.”

Kim K. has raised a lot more money than the democrat. I am sure her ad got the ball really rolling. I think she has a real shot at winning.

Hopefully she wins and if not will earn a good spot in a second term perhaps working with Tim Scott and others to bring the jobs factories markets back from Communist China into the cities where a labor force an infrastructure awaits
