TD Bank refusing login to own accounts.
self ^ | 10/28/2020 | Self

Tried to log into my TD bank accounts. After clicking on Sign In i get the page with

"Hmm. Looks like your browser's a bit out of date."

Page is showing 4 icons for latest browser downloads. Hesitant to download any of them. I have 4 windows browsers, all latest versions, working with everything else.

Call to TD tech support, they are blaming it on Win 7 being old. Tried computer with Win 10, it worked fine, also with phone access it's OK. If problem is with using Win 7, then TD has a problem. Lot of people and businesses are using good old 7, and if they can't access their bank account, Sayonara TDbank.

Spent 2 hours on the phone with TD, only told to upgrade computer. Looks like TD has problem with their "updated" system not being able to accept latest working versions of browsers with Win7.

Anyone else having this problem?

Some online systems will decline Windows 7 access since it hasn’t been securely patched in quite some time. Honestly, I wouldn’t touch a financial or health online account with Windows 7 now, even with all of the anti-virus, anti-malware protection in place.

Win 7 is obsolete...deal with it. This isn’t a TD problem.

Don't bother downloading the browser downloads. You have the latest browsers for the Windows 7 OS, but not the latest browsers available.

If you look at the version numbers for your Win7 browsers and compare them to the Win10 browsers, you'll see that they don't match.

Your issue is with Windows 7, unfortunately.

Maybe they are afraid someone will take all your money and you will blame them and not yourself. Crazy, I know.

You are using dangerously old versions of your OS and browser. Also, be aware that if you’re using Internet Explorer, MS has started doing forced redirections of certain sites to Edge. This was announced widely and recently.

If you must run Windows, you need to upgrade your browser. If you don’t need to run Windows, then I wouldn’t.

Call the bank, don’t download anything.

I work in cybersecurity as a security architect. Windows 7 is considered a vulnerable operating syste and many banks, in order to prevent attacks and protect their customers’ accounts, are no longer accepting connections from vulnerable operating systems.

Nope.

The issue is the security patches on some of the old systems are no longer supported. Their liability for the whole system could be corrupted if they did not “force” upgrades.

I was involved with the original web platform development for the predecessor to TD Bank in New England. (Banknorth Financial Group.)

I went into that with no background in web development or internet security. Those guys know what they are doing. If they say you need to upgrade...it is not a conspiracy-—it is the right thing to do.

I guess because I know them (or at least the ones that are left) I believe what they are telling you.

And I log on multiple times a day—even though they still only update overnight.

Windows 7? Quit whining. If you want to use electronic access to your bank account, don’t expect to be a windows 7 cowboy and expect the whole world stand still for you.

I’m using NT. No problem getting on TDA.
That said, I can no longer access Chase or ATT accounts as of the last few weeks.
Not very encouraging to read that even newer OSs are “too old”.

Just yesterday I got in an elevator, and there was no operator to push the button for me. Furious, I went to the building manager’s office and bitterly complained that there wasn’t an elevator operator! He looked at me like I was drunk and said, “technology”.

Go to the company’s direct link for any of the browser they recommend.

If they were hacked, the contained links may download a browser that is also hacked.

‘Hover’ over the links and see what the link is.

If it is for new Microsoft Edge then the link should be to Microsoft download site- but better to go directly to Microsoft and download it. Same for google.

You are right to be suspicious.

You are seriously taking risks if still on Windows 7. This effort by the bank...ought to motivate you to upgrade the PC/laptop, and the Windows package.
