High fat or 'ketogenic' diets could prevent, reverse heart failure (yes, reverse heart damage!)
MedicalXPress/Saint Louis University ^ | Oct 26, 2020 | Maggie Rotermund/Kyle S. McCommis, Ph.D.

Posted on 10/26/2020 9:02:31 PM PDT by ConservativeMind

Research from Saint Louis University finds that high fat or "ketogenic" diets could completely prevent, or even reverse heart failure caused by a metabolic process.

In an animal model, drastic heart failure in mice was bypassed by switching to high fat or "ketogenic" diets, which could completely prevent, or even reverse the heart failure.

"Thus, these studies suggest that consumption of higher fat and lower carbohydrate diets may be a nutritional therapeutic intervention to treat heart failure," McCommis said.

"Interestingly, this heart failure can be prevented or even reversed by providing a high-fat, low carbohydrate "ketogenic" diet," McCommis said. "A 24-hour fast in mice, which is also "ketogenic" also provided significant improvement in heart remodeling."

Diets with higher fat content, but enough carbohydrates to limit ketosis also significantly improved heart failure in mice lacking cardiac MPC expression.

"Our study reveals a critical role for mitochondrial pyruvate utilization in cardiac function, and highlights the potential of dietary interventions to enhance cardiac fat metabolism to prevent or reverse cardiac dysfunction and remodeling in the setting of MPC-deficiency," McCommis said.Ongoing studies will seek to uncover the importance of ketone body versus fate metabolism in this process of improved cardiac remodeling.

*** “I have been Keto for about a year, have lost 114 lbs, HDL went up, LDL and Triglycerides went down, blood sugar went from 200 down to normal levels and was able to get off my Type II diabetic meds.

So yeah, I would say it works. Turn the food pyramid over and start your life” ***

You are awesome! I lost 70lbs... 1 year Keto and 1 year Low Carb
I just act as if I were a Type II Diabetic ... (I was almost a Type II when I started this Journey)
I Check my blood Glucose and pressure every day. For me Low Carb is easier than Keto or Carnivore and it is working for me so far (I’m over 65 and don’t really give a rip bought much else, low carb has changed my life)
PS I Don’t Give a Rats Ass about Cholesterol either ... what I don’t consume, my body will make for me, Cholesterol is Essential but there is still not any known Essential Carbs

There is a brand of milk out there, called Fair Life, which tastes just like regular milk, but has half the carbs. It’s expensive, but if you can’t do without milk, and are doing keto or just very low carb, it’s worth it. Besides, as expensive as it is, if you’ve cut or starchy or sweet junk food, your budget might not notice.
Also, I make low carb ice cream that is rich and delicious, and has only about 50 carbs for a half gallon. PM me if you want the recipe.

Shouting doesn’t make what you are saying true.

While you may (or may not) wind up restricting calories there are a couple of problems with assuming keto weight loss is just calorie restriction.

One is that keto alone tends to plateau out for a lot (most, all?) of people at a good, healthy weight. I have never seen or heard of anyone becoming emaciated on a keto diet.

Second is that ketogenic diets do not suppress your metabolism like traditional calorie restriction.

I have been on the Carnivore Diet for a couple of years now.

Lost 40+ lbs. easily stuffing my face with Ribeye steaks (and cheaper cuts of beef). When I started with the 30 day Challenge, within a few days, I lost my Acid Reflux, lost my food cravings,no more blotted stomach or discomfort, improved sleep, and more.

Every month or so, I will ‘cheat’ a bit by adding/testing one food group type to a meal and observe any reactions.
Some cheese types and brands can cause discomfort while some do not. Same with eggs. Eggs from the local farmer were great but all store bought eggs would give me the runs. Small amounts of cottage cheese ok. Cream in my coffee is ok but will add back weight if lots of heavy cream is used - I use it to keep my weight UP! My weight went down to 142.7lbs before friends worried that my face looked a little ‘gaunt’ (lost my extra chin and jowls) but I felt great. Now I am 150 lbs. and holding easily.

For some of you this might be the diet for you, but it is NOT for everyone!

Some have going to the bathroom problems with the gut bacteria (everyone’s gut bacteria is different). I had another case of the runs for a week after being put on penicillin for a bad tooth, but recovered and been normal ever since.

I have had 3 blood tests during the first year and a half of the diet and I am happy with the results. Last one showed that I am in Ketosis but without being on the official Ketosis Diet - which I find a little complicated and demanding. I eat as much beef, pork, chicken as I feel like anytime and not have to worry much about overeating, or my health.

Do tell: What are the hamburger buns? I've been searching a long time and haven't found anything good.

Like many, I developed metabolic issues as I got older. High total cholesterol and high LDL were my challenges. Heart scan revealed calcium build up in coronary arteries.

Doctor recommended a plant based diet. I ate vegetarian (not vegan) for 2 years. Wasn’t that hard to follow. Gained 20 pounds and A1C raised to 6.2. Didn’t work.

I’ve been Keto for nearly 4 years. My total cholesterol is now ~120. Down from 230. My LDL is now ~40. Down from 80’s. A1C is 5.5. In my experience:

- Below 20g carbs per day will produce weight loss.
- 20-50 carbs per day to maintain weight. 50+ carbs and weight gain begins with excess calories. These levels will vary for people.
- Your body quickly learns to maintain glucose levels at a very steady level. No hypoglycemia or weakness when exercising.
- any cheating will set you back a week.

There are tons of recipes and products to make this choice much easier than it used to be. Much more than meat and eggs.

Here is a Keto shred. Lose up to 20 pounds in a month. Check with your doctor if course. Don’t cheat! Simple:

- Meat
- Eggs
- Added Oil to cook. Salt, pepper, vinegar. (I use lots of hot sauce.
- Leaves - green leaves. Spinach, Kale, lettuce, all greens. Your bowels will shine like a new penny.

Lot of bodybuilders use this to drop weight before a match. This is harder to follow than it sounds.

LOW CARB / KETO PING!!!

Thanks ConservativeMind and others. We were humming along at a great pace a year ago with one article after another, and then everything dries up this year, between the virus and the election.

As it is, who would have thought that we’d see an article flat-out saying the following:

“Thus, these studies suggest that consumption of higher fat and lower carbohydrate diets may be a nutritional therapeutic intervention to treat heart failure”

The next step is to get our medical ‘experts’ to at least consider that the above just might be true (that would be a start).

[p.s., anyone wanting to join, or leave, my Low-Carb ping list, just let me know, privately or publicly]

“Insulin is the culprit and the way you control insulin is to cut out carbs in the diet.”

Yep, I concluded the same. It may well be that high levels of insulin in the body is as bad, or worse, than high levels of blood glucose. And what is the ‘treatment’ for diabetes? Answer: to flood one’s body with insulin. In one of Dr. Jason Fung’s videos he puts up a study which appears to compare the rates of complications of those who have uncontrolled diabetes and those who ‘properly treat’ their diabetes, via meds and insulin (to lower their blood sugar). The result is the same fate for both groups, at the same rate as they get older. The one thing not in the study is what happens to people who go Keto, compared to the other groups - now THAT would be interesting!

I switched from lean meats to highly marbled a couple of years ago, and don’t spare the butter. Feel great.

That is great news. I have been on keto a few months now and have lost 32 pounds so far. I don’t want to drop so quickly that I have skin hanging off everywhere. How did you deal with that?

Actually fathead dough is faster to make than bread pizza dough. The first time I made a pizza with it, it felt kind of heavy, definitely a caloric load. Then since it’s been just tastier and better. I used shredded mozzarella, which unfortunately has a few carbs due to the starch used to keep it from clumping. Find the lowest carb pizza sauce you can (Rao’s is good) or make your own. I do pepperoni, mushrooms, and extra cheese. Eat as much as you want.

My husband has been on Keto for a few years now. In the beginning his doctor was skeptical but agreed to do blood tests every 6 months. His last several visits, the doc told him keep doing what he’s doing because his numbers are great. He wasn’t terribly overweight but he did lose 50 lbs, and now perfect cholesterol and blood sugar levels, it did take a while for the cholesterol to come down but it never came down on other diets he tried.

He eats a crazy amount of food too.

There have been some other benefits too. He stopped snoring, sleeps better, allergies are gone and has a lot more energy.

My son does it too but he cannot stay on it long because he loses too much weight. So he is off and on. He has epilepsy and he definitely feels better from that standpoint. His neurologist says he has several patients who are controlling their epilepsy through keto without meds.
