The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you wont be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Unfortunately, the wind moves everybody’s leaves into MY yard! LOL.
You took “fall” seriously? So glad you didn’t get more hurt - sounds like a bad one.
October is my favorite month too - love the cooler nights. My volunteer arugula is doung well. That’s all i have left of the gardens.
Thanks - definitely doing better. Bruises have gone to ‘yellow/greenish’ .... so attractive! I get some ‘looks’ ... people probably think I’m in an abusive relationship.
I have my fingers crossed for no hard frost (until after Thanksgiving would be fantastic - ha!) - I covered my plants last year & they did ok, until we got down to 30 one night & that was ‘The End’.
The only thing left (veggie wise) in my garden are my green bell peppers. Lots of small ones still on the plant & although they are big enough to cut up if I have to pick them, I’m letting them go as long as I can. Pulled the jalapeno bushes earlier this week. I wish I had some place to over winter plants, but I don’t. One day, maybe I can come up with a small greenhouse. A greenhouse & chickens are on my “wish list”.
Definitely do “early” ... for any kind of ‘shopping’ ... seeds, Christmas, etc. I had trouble finding plants last year ... my SIL saved my (veggie) bacon & found some 6-packs of peppers (jalapenos & bell) which she split with me. My local nursery, where I can usually buy 4-packs of almost anything for about $1.60, literally got in ‘nothing’ last year for many of the veggies. To add insult to injury, I had to replant my tomatoes - late cold weather & sunburn (my stupidity) killed them. Anyway, hopefully this year will be better. I do have enough canning jars for jelly next year - need to keep an eye out for other sizes - very short supply this past summer.
Gerald Storch Discusses Potential for Holiday Retail Sales

“None of the current on-hand inventories are enough to fulfill demand for a big holiday shopping season. Hence, my advice buy early, buy now.”
Very seriously - scared the cr@p out of me, too. The saying “there but for the Grace of God go I ....” applies. It started as a “trip” situation (trash bag left by the door) & then I fell into some things being “stored” on the floor by my elderly mom. All of that has been cleaned up/resolved. My black eye & bruises got her attention in a big way & proved to be highly motivating.
Heal up my friend!
Thanks! No permanent damage so I’m well on the way to being in decent shape again!
Again, it went from this (Aug. 8)
To this:
Which means many tasty sweet tomatoes a week, thanks be to God.
Nice compost bin! Our is smaller, one of those black plastic cube ones but it has held up well and with the amount of compost we generate we only empty it every other year. Our hummingbirds left early October and the suet has been up, used 4 cakes already, Just about everything s done for the coming winter outside. It feels good to be done early. We really enjoyed our first pawpaws and hope to have a bigger yield next year. Best wishes to all!
Well, it was 82 here 2 days ago! Last night 35 degrees. Now Tomatoes and peppers are in a concrete mixing trough in my garage. Most of the plants in my garden only exists in my compost containers! (Leeks and kale live!)
Sigh. I need to go out and see where to plant my garlic.
Daniel!
Looks Much better!
I have been reading about using hydrogen peroxide on plants to control mold and fungus. Might be something to research for next year!
Yikes!
Time to buy your seeds online and buy some extra for neighbors!
Now I notice white flowered daisies have replaced it and they are growing as planted but also growing wild and in areas no one would plant a shrub. Like between boulders in an ocean breakwater.
Away from the ocean you don't see many daisies, or rosa rugosa. I guess it is always a long term battle for a weed species to takeover and thrive.
Weeds will fight for survival right in the middle of another plant.
Around my house the bittersweeet vine is taking over. Some vines are growing up over 30 feet onto deciduous trees. I mention deciduous, because in the spring the vines come to life earlier than the trees, and get a head start in growing , using the tree as a trellis.-Tom
Well, my locust dropped all its leaves, and my Silver maple too! All raked up!
Now...My neighbors oaks will be dropping their leaves all winter and they all end up in the corners of my yard!

Musk rose, Keats poem; "...mid-May's eldest child, The coming musk-rose, full of dewy wine, The murmurous haunt of flies on summer eves..."
Pete...getting late in the day! Go grub in your garden, plant your garlic!
I have 2 bittersweet vines overwhelming my back porch. They have more berries than I have ever seen on any plant.
Also I have one in the front of my house trying to get in the kitchen window.
I actually like these vines for their tenacity, looks and lack of care needed for them to thrive.
Also unlike some vines, they don't stick to the house, just keep growing and looking for a foothold.
I can see where some gardeners wouldn't' like these vines as they take up lot of room and are going to grow on their own. -Tom
Tom, might want to do some research on it. With all those seeds it could spread quickly and become a very invasive plant in your neighborhood!
I Had a problem with Shasta daisies and honeysuckle. First a few, then big clumps of them. Now I dig them up wherever I see them!
Still amazed at how much you get out of a small space! Good job!
There are no daisies growing wild in my neighborhood -yet.-Tom
Yes, but you can no longer buy the 35 % Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
