A young couple who once dined at the Big Apples iconic Balthazar couldnt bottle up their emotions after ordering an $18 Pinot Noir but being served a $2,000 Mouton Rothschild instead by accident, the eaterys owner recounted this week.
...the restaurants night manager said the host of the business meeting actually praised the purity of the cheapest wine on the list, while the lucky couple jokingly pretended to be drinking an expensive wine,
The young couple were ecstatic by the restaurants mistake, and told me it was like the bank making an error in their favor, said the red-faced owner, who admitted the embarrassing mix-up.
The trouble was, it was me who was down $2,000, not the bank,

There is a Washington State Ruby Red Port that I am particularly fond of. A bottle of Graham Six Grape is a delight when found. NO WINE is worth more than $50 because it comes out in the drought regardless of cost. When starving in college, a bottle of Mateus Vin Rose was, well, a spectacular treat with my Lady.
The Billionaire’s Vinegar...fun read and true.

I’ve seen the Graham Six Grape in the store. Never tried it. I do occasionally like a port. I have a 1994 Warre’s Late-Vintage Port I have been looking forward to drinking but never seem to get it opened. I bought it when it was pretty cheap compared to now. I like it with shards of frozen dark chocolate. It will make your toes curl.
The Washington State Ruby Port is “Whidby’s”. Cannot get it here in East Tennessee. Had a cousin who lived up that way would bring me a few bottles at family reunion time.
Same here with the scotch. 18 year old single is a world of difference from blended Cutty Sark
I prefer smoked Gouda and a tart apple slice over the dark chocolate shards.
I’ve tried different cheeses but not a tart apple. That’s a new one for me. There is always something new to try.
I like 2 buck chuck.
Another good read and says the same thing——drink what you like. Has several examples of blind taste tests with the “lesser” wine being chosen as the best.
I like Winking Owl. I also like Oak Leaf. Sometimes I splurge on an Aldi Chianti.
Yep. Winking Owl....that’s the one.

Bottle Shock-there is a movie (with the great Alan Rickman) and a book by that name. The judges here thought so too.
White mixes best with gin. Pro Tip: Use a dry wine.
Red is the better choice when mixing with beer.
There’s a place off the SawMill Pkwy that serves REALLY expensive wine.
Heard the story of wedding guest who picked up a bottle of a pricey wine off a dinner guest’s table and chugged it. Sadly, the establishment presented the bill to the bride & groom.
We are NOT wine snobs - the dry stuff makes us spit like our mouth is full of cotton!
I guess much has changed since I was a child and our family used to go to the Laurentian mountains to stay with my dad’s aunt and uncle. I loved it up there.
I’ve never drank a $500 or $1000 bottle, but I’ve drank a few $100 bottles ($100 real price not restaurant which makes it a $400-500 bottle).
You wouldn’t have to have a real well-developed palate to tell pinot noir from Bordeaux which is mostly Cab/Merlot as a rule!
Oak Leaf has a good Merlot ...
When I was in the Navy and in Jacksonville FL, we used to buy Mother Goldstein for $1.95 a quart...
*************
Being in the Navy and cheap wine seem to pair well. LOL
Navy vet.
