Bagster, I'm a Christian but you haven't offended me. A litle history lesson is a good thing.
I would like to say that the use of jack-o-lanterns however, does indeed have a looooong history also. It was used way beck when (I've heard they used gourds and squash also) to place around their homes to continue to ward off the evil spirits that might try to get into their homes while they slept.
Not trying to be nit-picky just wanted to share info that I was aware of. There are some sects within Christianity that think Halloween shouldn't be celebrated because of what commercialization and satanists have tried to make it become.
I say go back and state the true meaning and nature of Halloween and tell the satanists to go to "h-e-double hockey stick" pronto, if they think it's such a good place to be.
One bummer this year is that covid 19 will cut the number of trick or treater's way down, if any show up at all. I will miss seeing those bright eyed, smiling, little faces when they choose which candies they want to put in their candy containers.

I heard the same from my father as a boy. We spent Sunday afternoons in the summer for almost 10 years sailboat racing on the Pamlico river in eastern NC.
I took 3rd place in the small cruising class and 2nd in the Sunfish class in our Bicentennial regatta in 1976. The guy who won the Sunfish class was on the USNA sailing team and his father owned the Sunfish dealership.
When I was in Officer Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island, one of the company Lieutenants for a different company overheard me talking with my company Lieutenant about sailboat racing. He then persuaded my LT to exempt me from Sunday afternoon duties so that I could crew for him in the Naval War College races. One Sunday we had just rounded the windward mark I had set the spinnaker when Intrepid (Amerca's Cup champion) cut not 10 feet behind our stern under full sail. At the helm, and cursing at us in French, was the owner, Baron Marcel Bich (founder of BiC pens). The LT asked if I knew what he was saying? I said, "Yes, he was casting aspersions on your ancestry and suggesting rude things that you should do to yourself when you arrived in hell." The LT laughed and told me to open two beers.
As for Ship-shape and Bristol fashion, is a combination of two phrases. The first is obvious. The second part, Bristol fashion refers to Bristol, England, near the mouth of the river Avon. Bristol played a large role in sailing ship construction for almost a thousand years. The water level can run up to 30 feet between high and low tides. Ships and boats had to be well made to survive being grounded during low tide.
