A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

-00!
Vlad wants “spaghetti corn casserole” for supper tomorrow to celebrate Cheese Day. We’ll have to go to Walmart again.
Shannon got rained on.
The worst part about dating myself is I can’t guarantee I’ll enjoy the company.
w00t!
Snicker.
ERK!!!
I didn’t see it coming!
I want to bake but all my bakeware is packed along with mixing bowls (I think) and everything else that I need. :o[
Maybe since nothing else is bound to get done today, I can do some filing that I didn’t do last week. *sigh* My plans just never seem to play out the way I want them to.
Vlad is baking cookies. We forgot to get ice, and we didn’t know we needed more butter, so I sent Pat with a handful of money.
Sigh.
I have some butter you can have...I can send it by DarkFax, if you want... ;o]
Its a good thing the boxes that are stacked up are full because they keep me from falling over. My balance is really off the last few weeks. It’s disconcerting as all get-out.
Pat made it back.
I just had a vision of creaming butter and sugars together for cookie dough! Now, I REALLY want to move!
But then I think of the unpacking...
FS and PW have been posting progress photos of their diet and exercise program, and they are both benefiting from it. I’m so amazed and proud of them! They’re working hard! :o]
And here I am, talking about baking cookies!
(Does this make any sense?)
Yes, it does.
Thanks. I often wonder how much of what I say is comprehensive and then I wonder if I should have just kept my mouth shut. ;o]
Not to worry.
I had a nap with Jake, but now I’m back. Bill the Cardinal is singing outside. James is in another snit. Reminds me of bad days with Tom.
Ah, well do I remember the days after I had my driving license of making a run for the store and hoping mom wouldn’t ask for change.
Don’t blame yourself. This is a swiftly tilting planet.
That sounds like a good title for a song.
I’m back, too.
I had an appointment at noon, and as I’m getting ready for it, I get a call from Charlie, but I figured I’d wait until I got back to call him. Well, the appointment person didn’t show up. All the doors were locked and there was no response when I sent a text. But well, he IS a doctor, so something medical may have interfered with his day off, so I’ll see what happens on Sunday.
Now, I need to call Charlie. I don’t want to, because I’m already tired, but I need to do it anyway, just so he doesn’t worry.
With the ice and butter.
Unnngh.
I was out in the sun just long enough for my body to start to sweat, and now I can’t seem to drink enough water. That will beat up in the middle of the night!
Charlie wants the movie, “The Replacements,” but he can’t seem to find it anywhere. He buys books and movies from some clearing house but hasn’t seen that movie for ages. I went to eBay and found it, and they wanted $4, free S&H. The only thing is, it’s a mini-disk and Charlie doesn’t understand those things. He doesn’t understand texting or photos on your phone or much of anything else electronic.
So I need to find a standard size DVD for him. It’s the least I can do for him.
